Evil U.S. forgives portion of debt to various African nations!!

G-8 forgives some of the debt racked up

The only issue I see here is that merely forgiving the debt does not stop the helth issues, corruption, frequent rampages and genocide that pop up from time to time in various parts of Africa. I feel that if the G-8 returned a portion of the debt payment after recieving proof of spending for education and healthcare infrastructure improvements, it may have been a better option.

The west has long ignored our brothers in Africa. This is a good thing, but without guidance it may turn sour I fear, especially if the last thrity years is an indicator.

sarcasm?
well, dont forget who was pushing for this and who was against it

But I'm glad this went through, but this alone is not enough by far, now there needs to be an economic build up and a fight against corruption.

Except that the US only comitted to 3% of what Blair asked... Also over 10 years sounds like a payment plan.

I think that given the fact that there are not enough safeguards, it's a semi-good proposition, not a great one, but good for now. Corruption in many of the nations with partial bdebt forgiveness is still an issue.

As far as the quantity given? Let's wait and se if it is enough, or too much before jumping into the deep end of the pool.

Africa is prized for its natural resources. That is oil, diamonds, platinum, nickel, copper, gold, etc.

The G8 is simply trying to win political points with African countries to establish favorable access to these natural resources.

African governments and leaders are smart and realize this. Africa will benefit from ongoing demand from Developed and developing economies. Asia is raising the ante by offering more aid and assistance and in different forms other than cash.

So what;'s the issue then with forgiving a tad of debt for bettering themselves. It's like rewards for good deeds. It keeps the honest honest.

Political points or not. The African nations, like Mexico are rolling in resources and doing nothing to speak of with them. We SHOULD encourage development of them, but not at the expense of education and healthcare for tomorrow.

I'm pretty suspicious of the motives of the UK. I hope they're not trying to re-colonize Africa. France just orchestrated a genocide in Africa a decade ago, a current one going on now, I don't think that it can handle another one.

No because they're trying to eliminate black people, remember.

You're a looney CoW, i'm sorry i have to be so blunt.

The problem was that many of the poorest nations, despite their corruption, never got to paying of the debts, because it grew faster than they could pay. Giving them a chance to get something out of their natural ressources is a good thing no matter where you are on th epolitical scale.

Most of the problems are a result of the rape that resulted from colonialism.
