Sorry, but this has to be a very stupid move on Nvidia part.

Who in there right mind will buy a GTX275 + GTS250 combo card for $349-419. when they can buy a 5850 + GTS250 combo for $370.

That 5850 combo will more than likely beat even a GTX285 + GTS250 combo, and still have eyefinity / DX11 to boot.

But I guess this is why Nvidia block physx when ATi is detected.

People who dont have dual PCIE slots they can put in two video cards.
Sure just buy a PCI-E x1 to x16 adapter. You really don't need a x16 bandwidth for running PhysX calculations.

Here's a low profile 9800GT to go with that.

5850 + PCI-E adapter + 9800GT = $390

Thanks for the info. I didnt know they had converters. That will actually help me greatly this winter as I wanted to run a card just for PhysX next to Fermi but lack a MB with 2x8 PCIE slots.

But of course also waiting to see if Fermi wont already be faster on its own hehe.

Looks like they set this one up for failure. Unless it's decently priced (<$200), there's no way this will sell; even then, there's literally no market for it. There are much better solutions out there (used 9600GT is a fantastic one) that cost much less.

I doubt it is the case, but when I first saw that photoshopped image over on BSN the first thought that came to mind was "boy someone over at NV must really be sitting on a mountain of G92b inventory that they realized they needed to move somehow and soon".

Step right up folks! For a limited time offer get your free G92b keychain for every G200b purchased!

It' great that EVGA recognizes the popularity of Physx and are going out of their way to bring an innovative solution to their customers.

If only other companies would do the same for their customers so they could at least enjoy some sort of enhanced gaming physics.

Too bad such a great company as eVGA is investing so much in a severely limited technology. With limited market penetration possibility, mainly due to the company owning said technology guilty of bad market practice, this will only end as a failure.

EDIT: 😀

While I truly doubt that Physix will ever take off, this is a nice idea for a video card and hardware physics card combination. I could see things like this being very useful in the future ala the voodoo expansion cards. Of course Quake made those cards, and there aren't many developers willing to stick their neck out to make a game that needs additional hardware that not many people are likely to have.

Batman AA is the only game that physx even did anything remotely impressive. even then we all know that besides the cloth effects that those things could basically be done without hardware physx. before you argue i am simply referring to how Nvidia implements it in the first place.

Actually IMO the PhysX effects in Batman were not very impressive. I think Cryostasis was more impressive (at least as a tech demo since gameplay was not very good) with all the water effects.

Oh and check this out:

I think I used to work with that guy from the picture...

Now if only eVGA started selling ATI cards. 😉

evga and bfg are probably the best thing nvidia has going for them right now.

That's true...perceived customer service from others was part of the reason I went for an EVGA 8800GTS 640 a while back. That was one area ATI was lacking but has been somewhat bettered by XFX selling both. Also I had to RMA my motherboard to Gigabyte and it was a decent experience so I wouldn't mind buying a video card from them either...so that's at least 3 manufacturers I'd buy an ATI card from (XFX, Gigabyte, and Asus). I haven't heard so many good things about the other ATI partners.

Solitaire will never be the same!

I imagine this card would be very useful for folding@home and a host of other CUDA based applications.

This is a cost effective gaming solution, little more. Anyone hardcore enough to spend on a dual GPU card for CUDA apps would likely go all out for a GTX295 and/or multiple GT200b cards and get much better price/performance and performance/watt.

The solution here is banking on Physx' relatively low hardware requirements, and hopefully the G92b can essentially be shut off when it isn't being utilized, otherwise its an even more niche card as it would be easier / cheaper for those with dual slots and/or older cards to recycle
