OK, here's yet another purchasing thread. I just don't know what to do here. I've got a buyer for my 7800GT and want to sell it while I can get a decent amt. I know the basic pros and cons, but point out more if I miss some:

eVGA Signature Series 7900GT:
*Uber sweet tech support bla bla
*>7900GTX performance with OC potential
*Quiet cooler, single slot
*Better software (control panel), IMO
*~$370 no rebate
*Free Hitman game! (Which I do want :D)

X1900XT:
*HDR+AA
*Debatable better IQ
*512MB RAM
*~$370 after rebate

Performance seems to be a tradeoff with these two; back & forth in different games.

Both should run 1680x1050 with eye candy on most every game these days no problem. I'm gonna go look for more detailed benchies to compare more directly :)

TIA!

I would say the X1900XT, its slightly more powerful, also the coolers not noisey as many people say. It is if the fan ramps up to 100%, but it never has done for me. I can hear the GPU fan after playing somthing really graphically intensive, but thats all, its not exactly drowning out everything else.

To put it in perspective, i cant hear it while playing BF2, meaning it dosent ramp up enough or at all for me to hear it. I run BF2 at high settings but with 1024x1024 or somthing close to that, this old CRT i have right now dosent do much more.

Both are top notch. I would say in this case factor in two things. First favorite games, then motherboard. Both of these cards will make sweet dual gpu solutions down the road. What is the rest of your setup?

I would any day go with a Radeon 1900XT, which brand you talking

This is the way you decide?
1) What is better at stock and by how much?
2) What is better when both are overclocked to the maximum?
3) Does ocing the radeon 1900xt give a lot of performance boost? If not then why not go with a radeon, why do you want to overclock when not required?
4) Which card is likely to create less problems, company, support etc?

ETC

For a single card solution... the x1900XT is the best currently. 7900GT if you have SLI mobo and plan to add another card. This is assuming no overclocking involved.

I guess I took my rigs out of my sig

Opty 170 @ 2.4GHz
2x1GB DDR400
DFI UT nF4 Ultra-D

If I were to do dual GPU, it would be SLI. I'm not really counting on that at this point, but it is a good point.

Game-wise, I vary a lot. I want to play Hitman: Blood Money which comes free with the eVGA. I want to re-play Far Cry soon also. Other than that, I've replayed all the new stuff and won't be basing my purchasing decision on those. I'd like AA @ 1680x1050 in most games is my goal, both of which should do it TMK.

If I can get a hookup, I will get a BBA X1900XT, but then I won't even be considering the eVGA ;) If I purchase, it will be this Sapphire OEM:

How do the X1900XT's OC? I read one XBit labs review and they got it from 625/750 to 675/800. The Inq eVGA review went from 600/900 to 665/925.

Also, is there a consideration if I ever want to have output going to a TV of some kind?

Overclocking will be involved ;)

1900XT easily IMO. My XT runs 690 / 1600 just fine also. For alot of new games comming out AA + HDR is really nice cause even with a res of 1680x1050 even 2x AA looks much better than no AA. While those SS cards do look nice I don't think they are up to par against the XT's.

See sig. On good air-cooling, I've seen results very close to or better than mine. I'd go for the X1900XT hands down. IMO X1900XT>7900GTX so a 7900GTX with 256MB of ram (I think signature series have 256MB of ram??) is even worse off. $370 for an X1900XT is a killer deal.

Get the eVGA then, that will save you at least $40. The sig series runs like a GTX which is faster than a XT.

Yes I was just reading that review and Inq's benchmarks on the Sig. I think I'm leaning towards that one, because I don't think my hookup works for ATI anymore :(

Yeah the 512MB VRAM is enticing to me.

X1900. Even if you do overclock the GT to GTX speeds, it's not going to match and X1900XT. And that's not even taking into consideration a X1900XT overclock.

The sig series can hit higher than GTX speeds most of the time. The GTX and the XTX usually switch places for performance depending on the game. Not all XTs git XTX speeds, the sig will hit over GTX easily. I would go for that. Plus, it'll still take less power than the XT unoverclocked.

The lowest price I found for the XXX edition is $349; when the eVGA is $359, has a free game, higher clocks, and top notch support that's not what I call a deal.

And no, not all 7900GT's are the same. Models like the XXX and Sig Edition are cherry picked; in fact the Sig Edition have custom PCB's and probly upped voltages for the >GTX clocks.

If I'm going 7900GT, I'm going eVGA Sig Edition.

Decisions decisions...

you serious? XTX speed is like 25 mhz on the core... and 50 on the memory I don't think I've ever seen an XT not reach XTX speeds....

XT 625core 1500 mem, XTX is 650 core 1550 memory. Anything beyond that sure they might not reach that high but I've never seen one NOT reach XTX speeds.

Yeah XTX speeds are a joke. What a ripoff in terms of the two models, LOL

I wasn't recommending the brand or model. "Cherry picked" is marketing hype IMO. I have yet to hear about anyone having issues getting a generic 7900GT to 540-560Mhz with stock cooling, I have a reference card that does 560. The GTs are very underclocked, it's the only way Nvidia could differentiate the two products beside the 512MB which doesn't affect the benchmarks.

The 1900XT is a great card too if you can live with the heat, noise and power requirements. I use my PC as a HTPC so noise if very important.

I agree, a generic 7900GT to 560MHz probly would be no problem. But the Sig Series is clocked at 600/900, and The Inq got theirs to 665/925. The eVGA is reported to use a custom PCB design for higher clocks.

Noise is a problem for me, but since at this point I think I'm leaning towards the X1900XT I'll plan on an Accelero X2 in the future.

I just bought x1900xt and its NOT noisy at all ...well, compared to my CPU fan which is like a jet engine...
