But that is absolutely nonsensical. How will the card be reviewed? In it's default state. And that wouldn't look good against a possible 6990.

"But you can overclock it and raise the volts!!"

Well yes, but you can do that with any card now, can't you?

Perhaps Nvidia could try and "persuade" (*cough* force *cough*) reviewers to include overclocked/over-volted metrics in with the review, but, as seen with the whole 460FTW debacle, how many reviewers will oblige?

AMD has released a card they "begged" people to overclock, and reviewers showed both stock performance, and overclocked performance, and discussed the problems.
I don't see why they couldn't do the same with an NV card which was released with a similar suggestion behind it.

But, there also wasn't anything faster than the 5970 in it's stock, out-of-the-box state. The 5970 was significantly faster than the next fastest card without overclocking. So I'm not sure how that might change things if the 6990 is the faster part.

I haven't seen too many reviews lately (ones that even include a 5970) showing its OC results (take Anand's 580/570 reviews, in example).

But that is a moot point. The chips they put into the 5970's were the best of the best of a far less power hungry chip than the GF110. More, in this case, isn't better (more power). You have a chip that would require greater reductions to meet spec, AND Nvidia would have to equip the card with the abilities to handle the "presumed" overclocking/over-volting (if they go the AMD route and actually do that). Cooling and powering 2 x 580's isn't nearly as easy as it was to cool + power 2 5870's.

This just reminded me that the 5970 is still the fastest card around. Is it going to be 18months before its replaced? Kinda sad when you think about it.

Except to those that actually shelled out the cash to buy them. I know almost did, until they shot upto $600+ for the standard models.

So how's that 24inch lightweight, slimline and easily adjustable CRT working out for you then?
I'll bet games look great on it....

Those (I use 2) 21" Trinitron CRT's give me a hell of a lot better picture I.Q. than any LCD I have seen.

Link me to a LCD that surpasses a Trinitron CRT and we can continue...ball in your court.

Whats the resolution on that thing? I hear CRTs had massive resolution for their display size.

I love my Trinitron's at (2x)1600x1200 85Hz Aperture Grill: 0.24mm

Can run EvE on one screen and have the web/IM/media on the other...picture perfect 😉

For CRTs it depends, I have a 17" visable are that I ran @ 1080p res with 85htz. I have two 15" visable that I could run @ 1080p res with 75htz.
15 and 17 inch crts are 4:3 so how are running 1080 for you res? not to mention I have never seen a 15 inch crt support anything higher than 1280x1024. btw 15 and 17 inch viewable would mean they are 16 and 18 inches which is not common at all.

Wasn't text hard to read?

Not at all.

The better of my two 15" viewable CRTs is 21" counting the bezel, as for my Dell 17" it's a whopping 23" total. They are 4:3 so I get big black bars along the top of videos. My 17" viewable goes all the way to 1200x 1600. My other two CRTs can go past 1080 rez as well. All three are from the 90s and were not cheap back then.

And for the record my main monitor is a 23" LCD Dell SP2309W running at the native res of 2048 x 1152.

you are not making any sense. if a crt was called a 17 inch then it was considered 16 inch viewable. nobody counts the bezel in the measurement. and running videos in 1080 is not the same thing as running an actual 1080 res for desktop or games. you cant do that and that was one of my points. that aspect ratio is not supported on you crts.
