EVGA GTX 460 Superclocked or Stock? Now with more questions!

Looking at upgraging my 8800GT. Fairly sure I'm going with the EVGA EE GTX 460 (1gb). However is there really a difference in chip quality on the superclocked version or is it just marketing for those who don't overclock? I'll be overclocking it myself.

Difference in price is about $22 more for the superclocked. Same warranty and everything else.

Also open to other GTX 460s (from NCIX.com, preferably) if there are better opinions on them (Gigabyte? MSI Cyclone?). Picked EVGA because of lifetime warranty.

I would say stick with the vanilla 1GB evga if u wanna OC it urself. Only reason I got an xxx edition 5870 over the vanilla is it was only a bit more and they didnt have the reference vanilla in stock. The vanilla version was non reference.
 
Well the Superclocked are probably tested by EVGA for higher clocks. You are paying for their testing and basically nothing else.

My GTX 480 is not superclocked but it clocks way higher than the SC model manually. 🙂

However, I see that MSI Cyclone 725mhz gpu with an even better cooler seems to come with 2 games for another $5 less than the EVGA above:

You get Metro 2033 and a choice of either Resident Evil 5 or Dark Void or Street Fighter 4. Considering the 2 free games, and a superior cooler to EVGA, I would rather get the MSI card.

To what? With nVidia being so tight-lipped about the cards, and changing mounting holes, there's very little that you can change it to, right now. In a few months, I'm sure Thermalright, Arctic cooling, etc., will have coolers out in volume for them (all they need to do is add or change mounting brackets), but for now, we must wait.

That's not always the case. Good example are my two 5870s....

The OC potential is specifically related to this one chip. It's pretty clear that nVidia spec'ed them out to be faster, but backed off on stock speeds and voltages, so that they could offer comparable perf/watt to the 58xx cards.

ahh didn't know of them, thanks! Sorry had to break the 2013 rule.

I just remembered Newegg has a Canadian site too, which has them at around the $230 mark so looks like NCIX is out.

Think the two best options from my research now are the MSI or Gigabyte ones for overclocking.

Another question though, would it be really beneficial to just spend the extra on a GTX 470 or HD5850? They cost the same pretty much, about $80 more than the GTX 460. I can afford it, but don't want to spend it unless I'll see a real difference.

It'd be in a comp with a Q6600@3.6ghz and 4GB ram. Power supply is a Corsair 520W so I'm guessing not good for GTX 470, especially overclocking, so if either likely HD5850. Mainly upgrading for FFXIV, prob some Battlefield BC 2. Play games at 1920x1200 on my 26" LCD.

Open to SLI'ing / Crossfire in the future too, when I replace the CPU probably late next year, in which the GTX 460 might be a good option again.
