eVGA GeForce 6800 GT display problems in XP

I just bought an eVGA Geforce 6800 GT and having some problems. Basically in XP, all of the text and images seem to have a slight shadow behind it. The effect isn't pleasing to the eye, so obviously it's not some feature in XP that accidentally was turned on to make the display look better--or at least I don't believe this is the problem. For my monitor, I have a Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 200 22" CRT, not sure if that's perhaps the problem too (I've been using this monitor forever and haven't noticed this problem before).

It appears the problem only shows up in XP. I.e. if I go into the BIOS, I don't see the haze/blurry/shadowy text, only when I boot into XP. It's not terribly bad, but enough to be annoying, especially after dropping over $400 on a new card.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

Thanks,
Dustin

Hrm.....the only thing that comes to mind is ClearType. If you go to Display Properties>Appearance>Effects, you can change the font smoothing option. The reason I mention this is because one time I enabled ClearType on my CRT and I noticed a slight shadowing effect. ClearType is designed to improve readability with LCDs and IMO doesn't/isn't supposed to work well with CRT's. And of course make sure you are using the latest drivers, check VGA cable to make sure it is plugged in securely, etc etc

It actually has me a little concerned, because I have an old Geforce video card that's running in a linux box that ended up going out on me. While it still works, it has horrible bleeding coming through on the display, basically where there's lines horizontally across the screen. While this isn't nearly as bad, it's still the same sort of effect but several orders of magnitude less severe. Also, on the linux box, I notice the bleeding even in the bios, unlike with my new Geforce 6800.

Any chance this could be related to monitor drivers? I noticed that Win XP only recognizes the monitor as a Plug and Play Monitor. I've adjusted refresh rates, color displays, resolution, and still see the same problem. I wonder if I need a special driver for my out-of-production Diamond Plus 200 monitor? It seemed to work fine in Win2k.

Just thought I'd follow up for anyone else having this problem and looking for answers. It ends up it was my cord of all things! I'm not sure why or how, but apparently the cord has gone bad. By moving to a new monitor cord, it fixed all of my problems.

I'm definitely surprised, just goes to show you, when diagnosing computer problems, never take anything for granted!
