Evga "free performance boost" for gtx 460's

It seems Evga is using a bios update to up the clocks and unlock the fan speeds for there gtx 460 cards. This gives there gtx 460's with 675 core a free 7 percent of performance.

Free news is always good news.

The fact that these cards overclock so damn well shows that nV had to artifically keep them low to avoid canabalizing GTX470 sales.

This is exactly true. I hope the gtx470 stock is emptied soon so they will bring on the 384 shader version. The same chip binned at 384 shaders and higher frequencies shouldn't carry more than a $60-80 premium over the 1 gig version.

If it's soon, it will without a doubt start a full on price war with ATI.

I think the 470 is a phenomenal value at it's current price - I just can't get myself to pull the trigger because I value quiet operation and my case does not mask internal sounds.

$60 premium (over the 1GB) brings it up to $290. Hope they start it out at $260 like the Radeon 5850 originally went for. If they have a lot of wafers allocated to them, might as well use them. I don't care if their margins are small ()

Agreed. I fully expect the 460 "cannibal edition" soon, so I'm not buying the 470 even though the after bing/after rebate deals on 470s were amazing.

Survived with my 8800GT this long, another two months or so won't make a difference.

Same here, I'd love to play Mirror's Edge with Physx support but I just can't move to such loud cards. My 5750 is pretty much silent.

Why not just overclock it yourself? If your brave enough to update your cards bios, OCing should be no problem.

I think it's also to unlock the 70 percent max fan limit on Evga cards.
It could also be so the buyer of new cards don't feel cheated?
mabe all new cards will come with this bios installed allready.

The 384 shader chip is the same chip as the 352 shader chip, so the 384 shader chip isn't binned.

The 384 shader chip is the full chip with 64 tmu's.

Where did you get this information? The GF104 chip (460) has SM's grouped into clusters of 48 CUDA cores not 32 so a 384 chip on GF104 architecture doesn't make sense. Also the 460 is a 336 core chip, the 465 is a 352 core chip. The 465 is a 'cut down' GF100 so any future 475 based on this architecture will also be a 'cut down' GF100.

Indeed, I checked AT's review and a full chip is 8 clusters my mistake. I got mixed up when you said 352 shader GTX460 which it is not, the 465 is. If this was the case then a 384 chip based off a 352 shader chip would be GF100. But it's not so it's a moot point.
