[Evga] Evga removes evbot from 680 classified cards

It was removed in order to 100% comply with NVIDIA guidelines for selling GeForce GTX products, no voltage control is allowed, even via external device.

I have just made some phone calls...

It appears that Nvidia is attempting to keep the performance differential intact from its unreleased "original" 680 that was withheld at the 600 series launch.
From what I gather with people who know about such things, this may portend a much earlier release of the withheld card than was projected just a few months ago.

This appears to be all about Nvidia milking the customer to the last red cent (since AMD has fallen flat on its face) and removing the ability to truly push ones cards into higher performance levels is being done to simply increase the profit margin.

It appears that Nvidia has forgotten the key to its overwhelming success. Providing the experienced user with the options to increase performance levels.

Once you start removing features to increase ones profit levels, you are heading downhill as a company.
It appears that Nvidia is doing just that. In my opinion this is a serious mistake that may increase profits "now" but lead to issues should such behavior be contiuned by Nvidia.

+1 for profit margins, -5 for end users
Greed is a terrible thing, if allowed to become company policy. Nvidia may be able to get away with this given the current state of videocard development between AMD and itself, but further down the road this could open the door to Nvidia becoming marginalized.

The massive profit margin increase with the 600 series over the 500 series, has appeared to make Nvidia management "profit drunk". As we have seen with other companies, such things can lead to driving into a ditch.....

It might be smart for AMD to keep their cards voltage unlocked if Nvidia keeps this trend going.

EVGA should tell nVidia to F/off (Speaking figuratively, of course. Politics is still the rule of the land 😉). I honestly think that they are a strong enough partner that nVidia can't afford to lose them.

This also insinuates that the aforementioned "original" 680 isn't 50% (or whatever rumored number is being bantered about today) faster than the current cards if they are afraid of the $500 GTX680 closing the gap too much.

I have to say I'm surprised by how long NVIDIA let EVGA kept that port on there. Any form of overvolting is frowned upon by NVIDIA, be it software (ala MSI Power Edition cards) or hardware (EVBot). So if you had asked me 3 months ago, I would have expected NVIDIA to put the kibosh on the 680C's EVBot port much sooner.

A shame really that nV won't even let the AIBs differentiate their products by offering voltage control. NV's hard stance this generation seems odd given that they never had an issue with this for 10+ years of GPUs, but now it is not allowed? All those fancy after-market coolers and expensive PCB components don't amount to much if you can't overvolt the product without a physical volt-mod.

Let's hope GTX700 and later series allow for voltage control or this seriously undermines the enthusiast market, forcing people to spend $ for the faster SKUs (like charging $100 for GTX680). I am hoping AMD retains voltage control at least so we have 1 good option for overclockers. If NV wants to prevent overclocking, they should have at least considered "K" series GTX600 cards with full voltage control for $30-40 extra.

Another reason why I will never buy another nvidia card ever again. They limit the ability of thecard to be constrained to an offset AND a certain power percentage, then they take away the AIB's rights to do what they want to the products they purchased.

Right to the bitter end though, "it's AMD's fault".

This appears to be all about Nvidia milking the customer to the last red cent (since AMD has fallen flat on its face) and removing the ability to truly push ones cards into higher performance levels is being done to simply increase the profit margin.

It's to the point now of being pathetic.

thread title a bit misleading. i came in thinking, awesome! we can now overvolt classys without evbot! save 100$ yea!

This is Nvidia's doing, they did the same with MSI, forcing them to alter Afterburner with version 2.2.4 onwards, so the voltage is limited to stock 1.175mV

Really bad for owners of future EVGA classified cards, or MSI GTX 680 Lightning's, people pay a premium for these cards because they are built to overclock, with better components etc.

More people will switch to AMD from now on probally.

How many people out there in the market share actually overclock their cards? I guess it's a small % of the overall sales of cards anyway. Most people will plug in and play.

How has AMD fallen flat on its face? They have faster cards at every segment.

I think that is a slam in two directions, nVidia is using their expected $300-350 part to compete with AMD's $500+ part.

nVidia milks their customers, while AMD falls flat on their face. Hey, truth hurts, but AMD falling flat on their face is a victory for us! ~$400 HD 7970s! Hell yeah!

No voltage control on a high end video card is a deal breaker for me.

As for hard modding, I'm not a fan of voiding warranties.

This sucks for the sake of sucking. I never OC my cards however, so all is still right with the world. I found out a long time ago that Vcard OCing doesn't pay like CPU OCing does. Bad news for all you GPU OCers. (i'd probly do it if I could, shhh)

🙄🙄🙄

So will ASUS be forced to pull VGA hotwire from their nvidia 600 series cards? Come on, an external device, really? I think most users would fully assume responsibility for any overclocking issues. Nvidia really are being stupid about this.

Everyone (not literally, but a lot of people) over volt and overclock their CPUs. Whats the big deal? Especially when someone spends 100$ for that privelege in the case of EV Bot.

wow, cant believe the hype that NV isnt allowed to regulate how much voltage is input into their GPU's...?
Nvidia can regulate it as much as they want, I'll be buying an AMD card next, that doesn't regulate it! 🙂

Well, I really dont think they will be bothered about 1% who want to OV as well as OC....Id just be pleased they were making sure I wasn't going to fry the chip....perhaps some are too used to getting something for nothing...<shrugs>, most are just happy to use the card to play games!

nVidia is really serious about voltage control. Curious how this may effect the market moving forward. Must be tough on the AIB's that try to differentiate from each other by improving upon power requirements and more robust components -- and gamers that don't mind paying an AIB premium for the abilities.

It may just be a matter of time before MSI product sku's and afterburner doesn't support any over-volting for Keplers as well, sadly!

Why would any company want to do business with a company that takes away your company's competitive edge? Not all companies are capable of engineering their own custom designs. Why should a company even bother to create a card like the Lightning, for example, if it's locked down to the same parameters as a reference card and why would anyone bother to pay a premium to buy one?

What's next? Cards are registered to a particular PC so we can't sell our used cards or move them to a new build? Don't think they won't do it if they think they can get away with it.

nv and AMD must have gotten so many govt benefits that I can't imagine what they are. They couldn't be doing this stuff and still be getting away with it. They even act like a state does in that... a) they lie for their survival, b) they threaten people with violence (the courts and potentially "law enforcement" to protect themselves and c) their revenue that they spend on stuff that doesn't make society any happier than they would otherwise be. nv and AMD are two sides of the very same pro-business coin of socialism!

Maybe we should all start acting like the state and its corporate institutions to save society from itself.
