I'm not exactly sure how it works... Do you need 2 cards to be able to card pool?

You don't need 2 serials to do a Cardpool. Just go register your card online, go to here, and either initiate a new Cardpool by filling in Serial #1 and waiting for someone to fill in Serial #2, or finish a Cardpool with someone else by filling in Serial #2 that has a Serial #1 already filled out.
