EVGA announces USB display cards

Fudzilla

For those that are craving for additional displays, EVGA has announced its UV Plus+ lineup of USB display adapters. These two display adapters branded as UV12 and UV16 will use a USB to connect to PC in order to give support for additional displays.

Both UV12 and UV16 feature DVI and VGA support, and come with the so-called GPU-less design. This design uses a virtual driver and high-performance DDR memory, which gives it enough juice to run Windows Vista Aero and do high resolutions.

The UV12 will be able to produce up to 1440x900 resolution at 60Hz of refresh rate, while its bigger named brother, UV16, will be able to give up to 1680x1050 at the same 60Hz. The design is stackable so you are basically limited by the number of USB ports.

These new USB display adapters should be available sometime during this week at the suggested retail/e-tail price of ?79. Both devices are based on DisplayLink chips and they will be definitely good for anyone that needs more than one additional display on the notebook.

USB has enough bandwidth? What data exactly does a computer send to a video card/USB video device?

Curious, though I doubt you'll be doing any gaming on the USB powered display. I didn't think USB 2.0 had enough bandwidth either.

"The GPU-less design utilizes a virtual driver and high-performance DDR memory with full support for Windows Vista Aero and high resolution capabilities."
And also
"UV Plus+ is powered by USB and uses Lossless Compression for transferring video signal which provides a crystal clear viewing experience"

So USB doesn't normally have enough bandwidth, so they use a lossless compression method. And it doesn't actually provide a video card, but a virtual driver, aka, utilizing the CPU's processing power. So you are very limited in how many of those you can use. All in all the product does not seem very attractive to me.

These are nothing new as far as i can tell.

USB to VGA adaptors have been out for quite some time now.

And i've used one...they're not that great.

If you need an extra output for another monitor to handle basic 2D stuff at low resolutions, then sure.

For anything else, stay away.

Also, $80-90 is wayyyy too high.

Lots of people aren't happy with nVidia lately, but i'd suggest that be left for a more appropriate thread.

These are being made by eVGA...in this case absolutely nothing to do with nVidia AFAIK ;)

Could it be a good solution for a second monitor for those SLI guys that don't like to switch between SLI and multi monitor mode?

Those would be cool, if they weren't 2D only. They seem to use the same electronics as the Samsung monitor that xtknight linked.
