No, from what I gather, NVIDIA (or their partners, including EVGA) recommend an 8 pin adapter. I am not sure why this is.

They recommend a power supply with the 8 pin itself, or a 6+2 pin that some power supplies will have.

Interesting considering BFG is including a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter.

Edit: forgot to say, congrats to the OP! I'll be ordering one as soon as I secure an adapter. :) I'd just buy BFG except I like the XFX warranty better.

Well thats good to know, i have a Corsair HX620 psu, and if i do decide on a 9800gx2 i certaintly dont want to have to buy a new psu when i just purchased this one not too long ago.

[

check the pci-e cables very closely in your hx620 box. I originally missed that two of mine were 6+2 pin. I have an hx520 that is about 6 months older and only came with the 6 pin adapters, however. if you do need them pm yellowbeard.

COOL, THANK YOU!
I just looked and sure enough, i have some 6pin with the extra two attached to them to make the 8 pin.
I cant believe i never noticed that before.

So far, I've noticed a 7-14fps increase over my 8800Ultra (now in the hands of some eBayer smile). I'm looking forward to new drivers on March 25th and more importantly combining this absolutely phenomenal card with a Q9550 @ 4.0GHz during spring break next week, hehe.

You already had an Ultra yet made the move to a GX2 lol. I use to be a video card junky also its good to see my disease has been passed on, I guess my spending use to be worst though it was long before stepups even exsisted. Oh yeah and I enver sold old cards to get new ones heh. :D

LOL, i thought everyone else did this too and it was condsidered normal. :D
I have two 512mb 8800GTS cards here and i want a 9800GX2.

I have been keeping my eyes peeled for my next upgrade but honestly havent seen anything that gave me the OH EM GEE factor like the 8800 GTX did and my 1st OH EM GEE card the 9700 PRO. I dont really give a rats ass about higher frame rates if I see much better minimum frame rates then I would be more interested. Faster cards have come out no doubt about it but until my GTX doesnt run anything I play then its not going anywhere. I am also not gmaing near as much since I quit WoW so thats another reason I havent felt the need for a better card, I didnt play alot of the newer games like Crysis etc.
I feel im alot smarter about my card purchases now a days so I guess I AM CURED., PRAISE JESUS. ;)

I missed it at first, too. I knew that my hx520 didn't have them so I just assumed that the 620 was the same. When I read yellowbeard's post about it I dug up my 620 box and there they were! Now I just need to buy a 3870x2/9800gx2 or some mysterious future card that requires 8 pin...r700/gt200 anyone? ;)

I dont think i can be cured.
I actually / honestly just like toying with new hardware.
I actually do more tweaking to my pc's than actual gaming.

I wouldnt trade it for any other hobby, there is always something new to "play with".

Strange that they dont "clip onto" the six pin like im used to seeing, they just hang there.
I guess it doesnt really matter, its not like it will be hard to figure which holes the extra two will plug into since theyre "keyed" like the others. (round/square)

Im just glad they are there, i just bought this PSU and i wasnt very happy thinking i needed a new one already.

Im so glad i dont.

Pfft when I did my upgrade to my 6750 etc I took like 5 days just running wires till I felt like they were clean enough to pass my anal test. Every damn day for 5 days I would cut all the zip ties and start over, I went from one disease to another. I guess its more about being bored though if I have any games going like MMO's to keep me busy then I leave well enough alone. Right now im not even beta testing Requiem anymore, but have yet to mess with my comp, so for the time being im satisfied, knock on wood. Too bad I dont have a camera for pics of my case inside cause its a thing of pure clean beauty.

And when ya finally get all the wires routed the way you want them and it looks all nice an neat, ya buy some new hardware and have to mess up the wires to get them to reach, so ya start rewiring the whole thing all over again. ;)

I stopped buying cases with windows hoping to cure that one too, and i STILL fuss over how neat my wiring is....LOL

I even took back PSU's JUST cause I didnt like the way the wires looked trying to make them neat. Yes everytime you buy something new you have to get it back the way it makes you happy. Fuck this I am calling Dr Phil tomorrow.

I dont think it will help.
Ive been like this for LIKE 20 years now, its just not curable.

Im actually proud of myself if i go a whole month without buying some new hardware or "re-doing" one of my pc's.
I'll look at the wife and say "ya know, i haven't bought any new pc hardware for a few weeks now"
And she'll say "i know honey, you're doing good lately".

So as you can see, we've learned to accept that i have a problem and just "live with it" the best we can. :D

Anyway, sorry guys for getting off the subject.
But im sure most people on this board understand, since this problem seems to effect more and more anandtech members every year.

What really sucks for me is, i own an evga 8800gts 512, and my step up expired on 3-17 and now according to the Evga website, they have extended my step up period to 90 days if i would step up to a 9800GX2.

Well, that would be nice if i could get an 8 pin adapter.

Shoot, I'd take advantage of that anyway. Surely those adapters are cheap and fairly easy to find??

It is an exciting card though, it certainly seems to be worth the money and significantly outperforms the GTX/Ultras. Some places seem to have slightly more reasonable prices for them too. I have to admit, I'm tempted...

Well just to let you know, I've had the wire management / excessive tweaking / frequent updating / new hardware disease since I was 13 :)

No clue if that's normal or not, but it looks like you got the issue with the screen shots taken care of. ...unless that is why you aren't running aero glass in the screen shot.

LOL MTDEW....you've gone through like 7 video cards in the past 4 months :p

I've been through 3 and thought that's a lot...and I'm still running your old GTX. :) But ya this part is tempting mainly because it is such a cool toy....I know what it offers in terms of performance but I'm pretty sure I won't be that impressed from a performance standpoint. Maybe I'll have to borrow a GTX and see if SLI is worth it but I still have my doubts.

I thought it's already known that they don't want people using any adapters.

The question you should be asking them is how does BFG get away with it and still have lifetime warranty.

Yeah I had to turn off aero to take the screenshots. Hopefully Nvidia addresses this within the next few days.

Wow that fast fast. ForceWare 174.70 - problem solved. This new driver addresses the dreaded GeForce 9800GX2 screenshot tearing bug in SLi and give slightly added performance. This is a strange driver. It has INFs for desktop and laptop cards and all Quadro files, so it supports just about every Nvidia GPU out there (no INF modifications needed). It is an International beta dated 03/19/2008 and the desktop INF already supports all cards GeForce 5 - GeForce 9.
