From the benches and fraps logs I've seen, an overclocked 9600GT beats the 3870 more often than not. Bundle the lifetime warranty and lower cost, and the EVGA is a better deal.

If you're really budgeted, that $30 difference between the 8800GT makes it a winner too (and no rebates).

I've read all of the benchmarks.

HD 3870 is faster than the 9600GT in most situations although the two are pretty close.

8800GT is a much faster card. For $30 more it's a no brainer.
 
Well Bozo, your link clearly says that unless you bump up to the 8800gt, the 9600gt at that price and OC'able is definitely a better choice. Cooler and better performance.

Could you translate the word 'faster' by percentage point i.e. 10% or 20% in most games?
I'm in the fence for the 8800gt but wondering the 9600 SC may just do the trick.

About 20% or so. Sometimes more sometimes less.
 
Wow, I'm out of it... I was thinking that was awfully expensive for an old Radeon 😛 (but I guess they didn't use GT in their naming conventions)

fwiw, remember that the 9x series of nvidia cards also use direct x 10, whereas 8xxx series uses dx 9.x

What???!!! I'm pretty sure 8xxx series nVidia cards are DX10. Check your info.

Both the 8xxx and 9xxx are DX10 cards. For that matter, they both use a G9x chip. The 8800GT uses a G92 and the 9600 uses a G94.

The difference between the two?

The G94 has half the stream processors and is clocked a little higher.

The architecture used in the 9600 is the exact same architecture used in the 8800. They are from the same generation, NVidia just incremented that first number (higher is better after all).

I stand corrected. I was told by a guy at work who has one that the only downfall to it was that its a dx9 card.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm still using a 7600 gt.
 
Man, I'm glad I held off on getting the 8800GT. I can save up a few more $$ and get the 9800GT. I've got an 8800GTS 320Mb flavor right now.

This review really clinched it for me.

While the 8800gt is admittedly still a little faster, I ended up buying one of these due to the low wattage and heat. I guess it depends on your priorities, but for me it seemed like the best buy in the long run and the least likely to over-burden my system. The PureVideo enhancements were also a big plus for me since I probably watch movies on my PC more then I play games anyway.
 
Why would anyone in their right mind buy this card, when for $30 more, they can buy a 512mb 8800 GT?
