evga 7900 GT CO: 558/871 with copper cooler

This is my first attempt at overclocking .. so some points might be absolutely dumb

So, I have a Dell xps 400 with the following:

Dual core 3Ghz P4 - 5494 CPU 3DMarks05
2 GB RAM
eVGA 7900GT CO - OC'd to 558MHz/871MHz - 7928 3DMarks05
Dell 2005FPW

Do these 3DMarks05 numbers look okay to you? I OCed using coolbits. Also, I have not applied any after-market cooler (Am using the factory copper cooler and fan). Since the same cooler is used in the super-clocked version, does this mean that I should expect a stable system at these clocks?

Will leaving the case open (I don't mind the noise) help in keeping the temperature down? I ran 3DMarks05, and checked the temperature afterwards .. it was at 47 degrees.

Your 3DMark05 score looks good. Leaving case open will definitely help with the system temperature, but then again your system will get dirty quickly and you will need to dust off often. If you have a lot of stuff connected to your rig, it could be a hassle. Checking temperature after 3DMark run isn't an accurate measure. Download Realtime HDR and run it with X16 AA. You can have the NV control panel open at the same time and check the temperature.

But the truth is, before you reach the temperature threshold you will start seeing artifacts first in your games/benches. (usually tiny black/white dots flying around) Artifacts are not always related to the temperature, but for most people with stock/air cooling, they are.

BTW there is nothing dumb about asking in forums. Your setup looks like a hell of a gaming rig.

3dmark 05 with 550/790 = 9438

thats with all the driver settings to their installed "stock" no quality shifting or even driver profile adjustment.

i have noticed that 3dmark05 is alot more cpu bound than we all thought.

wizboy was kind enough to offer a more suitable test using sli cards...to make the difference more dramatic then my test.
i believe you will get more mileage OC'ng your cpu than your gpu at this stage.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I ran the Realtime HDR at 16x and the temperature went up to 69 (Close case). I am starting FEAR (Open case) and will check the temperature when I exit. Hopefully there won't be any artifacts. Then evening will be spent in checking out options by Zalman.
ps, Dells do not overclock CPUs :-( (Unless you're willing to start soldering and stuff) .. so I guess I am limited to an almost 8K 3DMark05 number for now.
