eVGA 7800GT vs eVGA 7800GT CO

I know the CO gives you a factory OC and the copper cooler, but....

If I'm going to replace the HSF with an Arctic Silencer anyways, is there any real reason to get the CO over the regular 7800GT??? Or is the only difference is I will get a guaranteed overclock from the CO while I might get nothing form the regular GT??

It's the case of your mileage may vary....and how good your case is ventilated and cooled at the moment.

I mean my 7800GT is on stock cooling(see sig), so I say buy the non-CO one see how well it OCs, if it doesnt satisfy you, buy the Arctic Silencer and see if that helps....as a note you might be able to get quite high mine is semi-stable at 515/1300:shocked: it fails 3D Mark 05 on the 3rd test and I can game for about an hour before artifacting appears is what I mean by semi-stable....basically if I could keep it cooler it'd be more stable....so give it a shot

Pretty sure the fan size is bigger on the CO as well. (same size as the GTX) So it cools better and produces less noise.

I also have a non-CO eVGA 7800GT that OCs to 510/1200. From what I've read, COs and non-COs overclock about the same.

BTW, I played around with NiBiTor 2.5a last night, and compared the CO bios and non-CO bios. Nothing is different other than the clock speeds. So, timings, voltage and card ID are the same. Also, 7800GT voltage is 1.4v and can't be increased with the latest ver. of NiB.

I think I'd just get the normal eVGA 7800GT (at least I did yesterday)... Its just $299 AR now, and if it doesn't do what you want you could replace the cooling with some aftermarket job and only end up spending the money if you 'need to'.

My regular gt oc's to co speeds of 470/1100 with no artifacting. Im thinking of getting the nvsilencer to try to push it higher while
lower fan noise. If anything i heard that evga is going to be selling the copper heatsink. The ones they make for the other cards are
only like $15. So im pretty sure they'd be around the same price for the 7800gt.

They are the exact same except for the cooler . . . so if you're going to swap out coolers then don't bother with the CO . . .

Also considering on Newegg the CO is now $350 and the regular GT only $310 . . . easy decision I think . . .

my regular EVGA 7800 GT wont go past 463 without freezing in HL2/CS:S. I dont get artifacts until 475ish though. Other games seem stable above 463, but it seems like source games dont like overclocked videocards as ive heard others have the same problem.

to whoever said you can increase the voltage with nibitor, i dont see the option above 1.4v. im using 2.5 which seems to be the latest version.

7800GT COs also come with a heatsink-back plate. Standard GTs are naked on the back-side.

i dont think thats a heatsink-back plate... why would there be a heatsink on the back-side when theres nothing there. also, that doesnt even look like a heatsink, it just looks like a mounting back plate.

there are actually 2 CO editions. the 517 part that is labeled CO on the box and the 516 part that is exactly like a CO, but it just says w/ Copper Heatsink on the box. both are clocked at 470/1100 stock and the 516 part only seems to be available at newegg

516 is a slightly crippled CO version. It comes clocked at 460/1100, but its cheaper.

this is good for overclockers, because you get the same copper cooler, but at a lower price.

this wouldnt be a good deal if EVGA seperated the not-so-good overclocking cores, putting them in 516, and saving the good cores for 517. But i doubt EVGA would do this...

I have the 7800GT CO and it stays pretty cool at load (~65c) but the fan is kinda loud (not whirring but "air noise"). I'm wondering if the NV silencer is...well, more silent.

Reading reviews from newegg buyers, it appears the 516 comes clocked the same as 517 and it's currently only $319 w/ free shipping. Hot buy!

Are the pricier models really any better? I have the stock 515 model, and it clocks at 500/1190 just fine w/out any artifacting or anything, and fan isn't noisy. Not tried to see how high it goes yet. Don't they just pre-clock the others higher and charge more?

IF it wasn't for the deal at the time I would of purchased the gt instead of the gt co. IF you consider the game COD2 worth $40 NOW, I ended paying just a little less than $300. Heres something that helped me decided... review

If your not o/cing its not a bad card. In that REVIEW at those SETTINGS it pretty much stayed up with the gtx.

Just installed my evga 7800 gt tonight in an antec p180 case with a antec phantom 500 power supply. The fan on evga card is way to noisy and high pitched at that - very tiring on my ears. I am wondering what would happen if I unplugged the fan an ran a stock speed instead of overclocking? I am going to use this for video editing not gaming and I just need to be able to power 2 1920x1080 displays...
Now I am listening to the fan noise with the system powered on but no windows or nvidia drivers installed as yet. Well the fan run slower thru software?

Don't know what you mean by stupid, but I have to have a pci express graphics card to power my HD EDITING system.
No I don't need the high frame rates just support for high res.
I also have a zalman resorator so I think I can get around the noise issue if I have to...
Jeez. I got the card because it was bundled with the evga 939 motherboard... Believe it or not I need dual core as well.

So can anyone give me a real answer regarding disconnecting or inserting a fan contol or do I have to go out and get the zalman vga cooler to quiet this card down? I did find a zalman 7800 mod link but I don't know if the evga will work or not. Linky

My bad, I meant to mention that eVGA has a BIOS update for the 516 that sets the clock speeds to 470/1100. So basically they are the same, but the 517 says CO edition on the box

Working now, the zalman vga cooler comes in 2 sizes. I got the right one and it works like a dream. I am editing at 1900x1200 on LCD and monitoring out to HDTV 1920x1080i to my TV.
