Hi all....new to the forums here and have a question. I am mid-build on my new setup. Upgrading from an old socket 940 Opteron 148 system. I have purchased the eVGA 680i board model 122-CK-NF68-A1 and plan to run an Intel e8400 in it. My question is this. Because the 680i mobo requires an update to the bios (needs p32 to support the 45nm Wolfdale processor), will I need another socket 775 processor to even do the bios update or will I be able to get that far with the e8400?

Other key components will be:

OCZ SLI-Ready Edition 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit

BFG - NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT OC Graphics Card

Any help you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

i heard they had problems with yorkfield, but i dont know about wolfdale.

best place to ask is evga forums. They have there own forums and tech support monitors it regularly.

Have a Processor E3110 coming wed for a 680@3.6 e6600 on water.
Xeon processor E3110 = e8400.
Flashed a p32 bios today for e8400 support.
New bios or lower temps raised fsb from 1830 to 1930.
Be happy if i can get to 4100.
Find out this week how it goes.

Check the eVGA forums.

My question for you is why did you buy a 680i based board when you could have purchased an X38 based board or otherwise newer board that supported by the 45nm Wolfdales and the 45nm Yorkfields right out of the box?

Well my logic was this....being that I was on a tight budget for my upgrade and knowing that all I should require at this point is a new mobo, processor, memory and video card....I purchased the 680i initially because I was still undecided on whether to go with a q6600 or an e8400. Since the e8400 is newer technology, and seems to perform a bit better in games, I figured go with the e8400 now and later use the evga step up program to upgrade to a 780i or 790i board and then turn the e8400 around later and upgrade to the Yorkfield 45nm quad when they come out and aren't too overpriced. It should be easier to unload an e8400 when the 45nm quads come out via ebay. Another note, I am an nVidia fan and would like the option of SLI in the future. Plus I got an amazing deal on the 680i board on ebay. It was 149 plus ship factory sealed. I have been reading the evga forums since this post and it seems that I am gonna need another socket 775 chip to upgrade the motherboards bios. That kinda sucks, maybe I can raid one of my family members Dells.
