eVGA 6800 Ultra for about $300

Hey guys,

Long story short, I have an urge to upgrade, and at the top of my list is my video card. I also have over $500 with which to do this.
I noticed the eVGA 6800U card on Newegg is $435 Retail, a full $65 or so cheaper than the x800 XT PE.
I also have a $30 gift card to Newegg that my brother has loaned me, which essentially cuts the price to $400.
And finally, I would almost certainly sell my current 9800 Pro for about $100 (anyone interested?), which would bring the total expense of the 6800 Ultra down to about a measely $300.

That looks VERY tempting to me.

I would just like to hear some different opinions and viewpoints from fellow Anand members on this subject and whether this is a wise investment.

I appreciate any and all input! Thank you!

You may want to consider the 6800GT, which will give you 90% of the performance of the Ultra, but for (usually) $100 less. That would be an even more impressive upgrade, as far as bang-for-buck goes. 🙂

(Not to mention that GT's regularly overclock to Ultra speeds, but of course that's never guaranteed)

You've got several appealing options.

First, I'd say you could get at least $150 out of your Pro.

Next, you could check the FS/T forum and see if anybody has a nice deal (quite a few 6800GTs are going for right around $300). You could also check on X800 Pros that have been modded to the full 16pipelines, or normal X800XTs, or X800XLs.

You could also go for that 6800Ultra for $400 (might check around and see if anybody else has a sweeter deal on one as well), or buy an X800XL new for $300 (or less probably) or X800 Pro (and mod it yourself). Oh, and also, you could go for a 6800GT for about $350 new. It'll offer most of the performance for an even better price, and if you want, you could OC it up to Ultra speeds (or past) with or without an aftermarket cooler.

In fact, if I can't get the money I want from the person I'm trying to sell my Gainward 6800GT (its a Golden Sample, but I have an NV5 Silencer on it, as the stock HSF is too loud, and the NV5 cools just as good as it did) to, then I'd be willing to trade it to you for your 9800 Pro (depending on what brand and wear and tear) and some money.

I think this is the best you could do.

What does everyone think about eVGA as a company? Do they make good cards?

I've been with ATi for about the past 3-4 years, so I haven't really kept up with the different Nvidia card makers.

Also, I noticed the 6800GTs are only about $60 or so cheaper than the Ultra (at Newegg and Mwave anyway).

Evga got a black eye in the past over some image quality issues on their analog ports for the FX series, this was appearently fixed for their entire 6000 series line though. Ill tell you in about 2 hours when my Evga 6800GT gets here!!

😀

I just got a BFG 6800GT (PCI-E), slapped a zalman vf700CU cooler on it, and have it overclocked and running 3dmark03 and 05 at 441/1.15Ghz. I'd say save the $100 and get yourself a good GT.

EVGA is a great company.

I have 3 6800's from them, 6800GT AGP and two PCI-E 6800 GTs.

I deal with their head of Marketing directly, and they are an awesome company.....

Never any problems.
