About 2 weeks ago I had to edit my regestry using a notepad document I accidently choose to open all notepad documents with the Regedit program the one that comes with windows. (right click open with I choose regedit and accidently had Use as default program clicked) I have tried to use the open with program then I use notepad and click use as default program but It wont go back it always opens with regedit. If anyone has any idea how to fix this I would really appreciate it.

I'm not QUITE sure i'm following you but in general it sounds like you have a program opening on a certain file extension. Not 100% if .REG is opening notepad, or if .txt is opening regedit, or what at this point. What OS are you using? XP? Vista? 7?

If you are in XP, go to control panel and then folder options. Under the File Types tab you can change the program associated with any extension. In Vista and 7 if i remember correctly its under programs in the control panel. In classic view click "default programs" and then click associate a file type or protocol with a program, and find the extension you are having issues with and make the appropriate changes.

Its everytime I try to open a .txt file it tries to edit the regestry.

Thank you for your suggestion but it still wont let me change it under (associate a file type or protocol). When I click .txt and then change program the (open with Windows) appears. Notepad is the very first one up there. I click on that and then the (always use the selected program to open this kind of file) is greyed out and no checkmark is in it. When I hit ok it remains with the registry editor and does not change it.

If I click on any other one the check mark is in (always use the selected program to open this kind of file) except the one that I need the .txt file. Its very frusterating.

I dont use any passwords on my pc. I'm pretty sure that means I am admin so I dont think it could have anything to do with admin rights.

Thanks for your suggestion if you have any other ideas I would appreciate hearing them

Ok thanks to orignal suggestion I was able to get it. I went back one screen and choose Pick default programs. I then picked wordpad and put a check mark in the .txt file. and Bang fixed. Thanks a ton for your help without it I would not have been able to fix this problem
