everything good thanks to the helping hands of you guys

Thanks to you all for your help, i was able to complete my first AMD 64 overclock sucessfully 😀 Keep up the good help, hopefully one day i can get as knowlegable so i can help other out there.

My system specs:

Antec Trupower 500W
AMD 64 3500+ (winnie) @ 2.5 Ghz with multiplier 10 @ 1.5V
4 X 512 mb HyperX Kingston DDR500 @ 250Mhz @ 2.6V
Giga-byte SLI mobo
Sapphire X800XL 256mb PC-express video card
Audigy 2 SZ sound card
Seagate 200 Gb SATA 7200RPM
Danger den water cooling for GPU, bios and CPU.

Ok now for a side question if anyone feels like throwing his 2 cents.

I am trying to hit the 260 fsb mark, but so far no luck. I tried to put my memory divider to 166MHz, increase voltage up to 1.55V, HT x 3, multiplier 10 and prime95 keeps on having errors in In-place FFT, any tips on this?

😕 ok now i wonder:

what would yield more performance:

multiplier 8 X 312 fsb
multiplier 9 X 278 fsb
multiplier 10 X 250 fsb

i wonder if i could go multiplier 11 X fsb 250, cant wait to go home to try and see, stuck at work now.

May depend, which FSB squeezes most out of your memory (combination with low dividers, tight timings, etc.).
I would prefer (and I do) running 250 straight, as the Hypertransport at 4x is at his maximum of 1000MHz again 😀

Just saw your memory is already at 1:1, so I'd stick with 250...more FSB (HTT resp.) and you will need dividers...

11x250=2750 => Oh, oh... :Q

11x250=2750 => Oh, oh... ???
is this bad???

also my current voltage is 2.7V for 3-4-4-8 1T memory, this is hyper X kingston DDR500, those are the stock timmings, i wonder how can i adjust them to squeeze more performance out of the ram. I am pretty sure this ram can stand a higher frequency, almsot 280 or 290, i will check on that.

Hmmm i was hoping to squeeze even more out of the winnie, reason why i bought a water cooling system. I will check my temps on load, but pretty sure they stay rather low. So i was trying to see what would be the max i could get from this chip.

Maybe with watercooling the is a slight chance to reach 2750 (with a pretty decent chip)
The oh, oh just referrred to the relatively high frequency... 😉
Considering the errors you described above (prime errors in spite of relaxed ram and HTT multiplier), the chip may have already reached his frequency limit, which not neccessarily depends on the temperature alone... You may try 1.6v though...

If yout memory is rated DDR500, I would first try to get 2.5-4-4-8 stable (up voltage)
I also have to mess around with this some more to get my mem 1:1 with 250 and more relaxed timings, cos' there is a big increase in bandwidth for the sacrifice of some reponsiveness 😉

IMHO you are limiting your overclock by running ram 1:1. All the best overclocks I've seen on A64's are using a divider. With the A64's on-die memory controller when you o/c with ram 1:1 you are putting additional stress on the CPU. The best I can hit running 1:1 is 2.45gz, but using a divider my current settings are 2628mhz w/ram @ 236mhz.

I understand your ram is rated at DDR500 and is capable of higher speeds. I also have ram that is capable of much higher speeds, but on A64's it never makes sense to sacrifice CPU speed for ram. I have tested this pretty extensively and the results are amazing, 50mhz of CPU speed increase will more than offset any change in ram speed.
example 2500mhz w/ram @ 180mhz will beat 2450mhz w/ram @ 245mhz hands down.

Ram timings seem to be more important than speed on A64's. The general rules for overclocking A64's

1. CPU speed is king, always use settings that get your best CPU mhz
2. Run the tightest timings that you can on ram
3. Maximize ramspeed as a third priority, never sacrifice #1 or #2 for higher speed.

In your case with the DDR500, to get your best CPU overclock you will have to run at less than the rated speed of the ram, which may enable you to run tighter timings like 2.5-4-3-8 or maybe even 2.5-3-3-8 or at least 3-3-3-8

Good thoughts GD...I definitely will do some more shoot outs besides the pure bandwidth to find the optimum for my setup...
Unfortunately the core definitely reached it's limit. Well, I could crank up the CPU cooler, but "enjoy the silence" is my primary objective 😉

for me, screw the silence, let there be noise, i play the games loud enough anyways, so running the fans at max speed thru the radiator is no problem😀

I am trying to get the best performance, maybe i will try and squeeze some more voltage into cpu, about .025 at a time until i get past prime95, the watercooling should keep the cpu safe.

well, i set it up to 1.6V to cpu, memory at 166Mhz divider, Right now got the FSB at 263. So the cpu is now 2634.98 MHz with memory at 218 MHz.....

just ran prime 95 for a couple of minutes to see if i had it wrong, plan on running 12 hours tonight. It looks like at 264 prime 95 on small in-place fft gives me a lot of warnings, and in 265 it gives me errors. I will continue to monitor it and keep you all updated. Try to get the most juice out of this cpu.

running at fsb 260, multiplier 10, memory at 2.6V 3-4-4-8 1T, memory divider 166Mhz, running prime95 while at work, lets see what happens, looks like the limit would be 260 fsb with mutiplier 10.

Try 11 by 240 running ram at 1:1 using 1.5 vcore, its works a treat for me! try lowering your htt as well, since I lowered mine to 3x I have noticed the case & cpu running cooler. Running the ram at 480 will let you tighten the timings a bit as well. My memory spd is 10-4-4-3, And i get 8-3-3-3 at stock voltage. When I was overclocking this box I had awful trouble in the 25xx range so I skipped it and went straight to 26xx mhz and I havnt looked back since 😀 Sandra has this box running faster than a 2.6ghz opteron.

good idea, i am pretty sure at 240 1:1 memory will give me more and at the same time i can have really nice stable 2.6GHz. All the ignredients for an nice performance boost.

it worked, thansk a bunch man, i am running stable @ 240 multiplier 11, memory 1:1 by using 1.6V to vcore. Was able to lower my memory to 2.5-4-4-8. Going to try and lower it more later.
