Everyone using their emergency blinkers on the road?

Today when I was driving up to my university, I was on a 2/3 lane highway when I noticed something I've never seen before. I was on the left lane, and at one point, when I looked over to the right lane, I saw someone using their emergency blinkers. So was the car in front of him, and the car in front, and another, and another... and I must have passed over 20 cars that were using their emergency blinkers. I sat there praying there wasn't some kind of accident that would have held me up in traffic, but there was nothing...

So I mean what happened here? Did somebody set off a false alarm? Is it a rule (or unwritten rule) to turn your emergency blinkers on if the person in front of you has their blinkers on?

Sorry if it's a stupid question, but let's just say I was one question away from not passing the written drivers exam three years ago.

Also the worst. Driving on Route 18 is absolute hell around New Brunswick.. they've been working on it since long before I started traveling that road on a regular basis, and will still be working on it long after I'm gone.

So it looks like it may have been funeral... but I didn't see any vehicle that looked out of the norm. Just a bunch of cars.

Wow, well, never knew that for a funeral people did this. Learn something new everyday.

Probably a funeral procession.

They used to have all the cars turn on their headlights to indicate that they were part of the procession, but with so many cars having always-on headlights these days, it would make sense that they have all the drivers turn on the 4-ways instead.
