Everyone on these forums claims to be a car guy.... who really is?

mine is just over 3 seconds faster then stock.

But mine is only built for towing... speed is just a sideeffect of the 570lbs of Torque 😀

Edit: So I'm 3 times the truck guy then you biznitcheZ 😉

I've got a 1976 Porsche 914 that I'm "keeping on the road for a few years to have fun with" before I get my own house and have the space to tear it completley down. The 914's not a 1/4 mile sort of car, more of a winding road car, I've never had it to a track. The engine has been mildly tweaked in the sense that it has been backdated to earlier specs (less-restrictive early-style exaust, removal of the smog pump) and the car is slightly faster than stock, being roughly equal to a '73 or '74 2.0.

Aside from the stuff that requires belt removal (and consequently a $600 tensioning guage to put the belts back on) I do my own wrenching on my daily driver (1987 924S) also. I spent most of yesterday morning and early afternoon fishing out the sunroof's drive cable (previous owner had backed it completely out of the motor assembly) and set all the microswitches for the stop points. Have the two gears on order that the PO stripped when backing the cable out of the motor. (Why they didn't stop pressing the button when they heard gears crunching I'll never know.) For $20 (including shipping) worth of gears and a few hours of my time I'll have fixed a problem that has a going rate of $200 according to the people who have the same car but take it to a dealer for service.

I've also fixed various ancillary items on a 1989 F-150 that was in very bad shape (a friend go thoroughly hosed when he bought it, the thing got sold in under a year).

Once I'm out on my own, I'll be able to do more work, but I just don't have the space right now to do major wrenching. Mom and Dad don't want a dis-assembled car in their garage for some reason.

I am not a car guy by your definition.

I guess I am a "driver" or something.

My last car was a V8 67 Mustang daily driver and now I drive an SVT Contour. I love my cars, know all about my cars, outdrive people in my cars. but I have mechanics do the work...

Nothing really wrong with that, just remember Drivers NEED mechanics, Mechanics don't need drivers 😉

I can say I'm a car guy but I don't have a lot of time to go out and clock my car due to a lot of factors.

But yeah, I've pretty much done everything to my car so far.

I'm getting Tokico Illuminas tomorrow and I'm going to install them onto my 92 Si hatchback.

🙂

yes. you wannabe.

I inflated my tires to 40 P.S.I., I dropped two seconds in the quarter and I now get 10 more miles to the gallon.

You're such a ricer.
Maybe, he'd be a ricer if he dropped the air pressure to 20 P.S.I. 😛
I think most of those tubbed Civic's with the FWD slicks (LMFAO) run about 8PSI in those

I have an 89 5.0l mustang coupe but since I just bout it last month I haven't done squat to it. I also I have an 89 dodge caravan turbo that should have ran around the high 16s stock but should run around the mid 15s currently 🙂. Sofar I have installed a boost and a/f gauge, $15 grainger boost controller, 2 1/2 inch exhaust with highflow muffler, silicon filled motor mounts, some paint work, and nicer wider rims. I have screwed up the trans and am going to replace it with a built unit and I have a probe/mx-6 intercooler and talon bov laying in my garage waiting to be installed. Those things along with more boost should get it into the 14s. 14s aren't that impressive but its a minivan 🙂.

And one of the Mustang

I also had a 67 galaxie that I did a bunch of crap to.

German rice...lol
Roger's da man!

I know my old aircooled VW's pretty well and have always done all my own work on them.

On my newer cars, I just stick to the basics, brakes, oil, plugs etc. I just want them reliable and to get good gas milage. I don't need to race them... My bus, on the other hand, I'll need to take to the strip one day! 😉

How fast was it? TOO FAST! Lost my license with it twice. That was enough. Been cruisin' in land yachts ever since!
Cute girl in that photo. I'm trying to keep from thinking that by now she's old enough to be my mother.

My thoughts exactly, lol.

Well, I don't really consider myself a car guy, anyway.

I'm an engine guy. 🙂 All engines....

Working on my car.....
I think I am going to cut short and get a Dakota R/T or something along those lines. put a Vortech S/C on there. woot!
I was goign to turbo my R/T but meh.. I want a V8 I think... or a Maxima 20th anniversary.

😀

Better hold off, the 360 is nothing impressive, I have already smoked 2 Vortech supercharged Dakota R/T's that had way more work into theirs then mine. Plus they got less milage, I hate that fuggin motor, the 340 should have been the one to prevail.

I have a Suzuki Sidekick with a centerforce clutch. It ran low 30's. It now runs high 28's.

My car is as clean as the day I bought it. The owner who had it before me bought it off the lot himself, and cared for it meticulously. Never modded, until I got it. So far all it's got is a recalibrated SBEC (ECU), K&N Cone filter, and an Eagle Talon blowoff valve (custom jobby). The car is getting a 2.5" exhaust within the next couple of weeks. I do just about all the work on my car myself (the only time I get help is when I don't have the tools or time to do it, like swapping out a P/S rack...). I know every inch of my car and can do any work I need to it, so you could call me a car guy.

I stuffed a hopped up 351C that I built myself into a 1980 fox body Capri. Then a year or so later shoved a 40 over 302 (307 CID I think) that I built myself into it. I swapped more engines that I care to think about. I figure going from a 255 to a 351C was worth more than a second or so.

I've rebuilt three engines from the oil pan up (two V8's and a VW), done may front suspensions and brakes, replaced a timing belt or two, replaced more than one timing chain, replaced both axles in a solid rear end (GM), replaced a few CV half-shafts (easy to do when I have access to a lift and air hammer), dropped a tranny or four, done a couple of shift kits in some autos and clutches/pressure plates in some manuals. Of course there are the various and sundry little things one does in routine of owning cars.
