Add me to the list. Unfortunately for me, lived there in my yonger days, moved to the mainland when I was 7 cuz my mom got married. Visit there pretty often tho. Kind of coincidence, but my mother-in-law's husband lives in both HI and here in WA. So not only do I end up having fam there, but the wife does too!!

How many Hawaii threads are needed? There was one not too long ago. There are other ways to bump up post count.

Kona side, spend a day cruising Ali'i Drive. Main drag right there in Kona. Go on a sub ride, get some Ice Cream on the board walk, have dinner at Dukes. For shopping and golf, hit up Waikoloa. They have a "mall" called King's Shops. There are 2? 3? 4???? golf courses there??!?!?!?! Walk through the Hilton Waikoloa. Absolutely AMAZING hotel. They have the "Dophin Quest" at that hotel too. You can watch hotel guests swim with the dolphins. The hotel has a monorail, and a boat ride thing that go travel between the 3? 4? "wings" of the hotel. The place is BREATHTAKING as far as hotels go. Stop in Waimea for an authentic Paniolo perspective on Hawaiian life. Visit Parker Ranch, the (second?) largest ranch owned by a single estate in the US. Hilo has a nice "old town" feeling to it. Few things to see and do. Of course, there are all the Volcano attractions. The big island is also really big on historical sites. If you have a chance, head to "The City Of Refuge". Very interesting history there.

How do I know this? My aunt and uncle live in Kailua-Kona, on the mountain overlooking Kona town. They've flown me out a few times, took me to all the sights. Also, if you go to Waikoloa, have dinner at Roy's and order the Chocolate Souffle'. You won't regret it!!!! It's a house specialty that you have to order at the same time you order dinner. The duck is also amazing!!!!

I'm probably moving to Oahu at the end of July for grad school UH-Manoa (Political Science maybe switching to Travel management if it doesn't work for me).

Any living recomendations?

I'm single so I just need a studio or one bedroom.
I've looked here quite abit but, are apartments on this site Link overpriced (sometimes they are). I know it is going to be rather expensive one way or the other.

I'm not sure exactly where I want to live but, I don't want to live to far from the university. Although, I do plan on getting a motorcycle.

Also, I need to look into getting a part time job/full time job, any ideas for a college grad with basically no job experince and a Poly sci degree.

Actually, the site you refer to is the best site to get some pricing on island of Oahu, or you can check www.honoluluadvertiser.com 's sunday rental too.
price for condo or 1 bed room is range from $500-1000+, if you plan live near UH, there are many appartment to select from. most likely you will look at something around 600-800 for a nice condo and 800-1000 for a good 1 bed room apartment. If you get lucky, you might able to find for less than that, but don't count on it.
As far as job goes, it is not what you knwo, it is who you know. check UH's career office, there are many job offer, most of them are low pay job. If you look hard enough, there are many job open, but you have to send out alot resume, before get an interview.

You dont' really need a Motocycle, Bus system around Oahu is one of the best in US, I dont' have a car for 2 yrs, and it works out just fine. Save you money for party. ^_^

Ditto that. "The Bus" in Hawaii is VERY good.

Good pointers, but you make Ali'i drive sound big. :) I live in Kona, well when not at school, and the first impression you get when you arrive is that its the moon, the airport is surrounded on three sides by black lava. Taking a day down at volcano is worth it, as well as a day in Hilo to see the sights, in particular the waterfalls. Kona is a lot smaller than Hilo, so there isn't quite as much to do, at least in my mind. Going up north to Kohala to see the valleys is also interesting. If you have time going into Pololu valley and hiking around is interesting. Waipio is also interesting, on the other side, which you can drive down if you have 4 wheel drive, the road is one lane and really steep. There are quite a few people down there, and I can attest to the fact that the stream there is a lot colder than it looks. :Q My brother surfs out there when we go up north, pretty rough but in the mornings its nice.

Fishing is always fun if you enjoy that. I've gone a few times myself, haven't caught anything big though, have hooked a few marlin which are really fun to fight. There is a lot of good, expensive food, which needless to say I don't each much of. Waikoloa is the hotel area, as stated above, and really expensive. Brings back memories of hot tubing and ice blocking.

If you are ever on the big island this summer rotc1983 let zug (he can get ahold of me) or me know. I should be back June 16th or so. I doubt zug will have any free time, but a meeting on the big island would be sweet. And it gives me an excuse to go do all the touristy things again.

And now I have to decide if I am going to transfer to UH or stay here at UW. 12 days to decide, hmmm. Maybe I should flip a coin.

Been there many times; loved it every time!! I want to go back there on my honeymoon. Kona is my favorite place of all the islands. I'm looking for a condoish place to stay in the area for the honeymoon. I don't have enough money to stay in some posh resort, nor do I want to. With a condo, we can cook most of our meals ourselves, and go out a few nights for some nice dinners. Anyone have any suggestions??

When I first moved there we stayed at a place called Kanaloa at Kona, just north of Keahou bay. Its a little expensive though. Any place along Alii drive would be good, and within walking distance of probably 4 beaches, depending where you stay.

And in continuation of my earlier post. There is a great beach between Waikaloa and the airport called Kiholo which usually has very few people, pretty much just locals. There is a freshwater lava tube and the north side has a fresh/salt water pond, which is really cold, but has a lot of turtles, which is cool to swim around in there. There is a road down but the gate is locked at 3pm every day, which I found out the hard way. But a lot of people just park and walk down, if you are driving north, just as you get to the overlook there is usually a bunch of cars, thats it.
