Every Tuesday that Passes Makes Me Angrier At Apple

(edit) Praise the good Lord who's name is Jobs. It's here.

I don't mean this to be an anti-Apple post. I wan't a new MBP sooooo bad. My girlfriend just got a 2.0 Intel MBP on Craigslist and I've been playing with it, god its a beauty. I've been wanting one since Nov-Dec, thinking they would be updated at Mac World.

Nope. Every Tuesday I think the update is coming. Nope.

Now Dell, HP, Alienware are all releasing Pernyn, all except Apple.

I really don't think its coming to March.

What really ticks me off is that there is NEVER any indication from Apple of when the release is. If they told me it was due out on X date then I would at least be able to plan. There is no way I wan't to pay 2,000-2,500 for equipment that costs about 1.5k or less in the Windows world. It's ridiculous.

Now I've fallen into the seedy world of Mac Rumours and Apple Insider which only makes the problem worse with every gd false rumor they provide.

WTF Apple. I have money for you, which of your corporate lackeys fell asleep in business class?

Sorry for the rant.

/rant.

If they do a complete redesign of the case I wouldn't buy a new MBP (not that I'm looking to anyway) until the next revision came out so they can work out all the design bugs. That would probably be about another 9 months to a year. (Refer to all the issues with Rev A Apple hardware designs, I think there are issues with the Air)

If they just spec bump I'd buy one immediately.

So I guess the question is, is the new Penryn processor worth all this fuss? This is an honest question, I don't know the details in particular.

Personally if I needed a MBP now, I'd buy it now. There is always a new rev coming out!

My thinking is that Apple might be waiting for a new graphics chip to go with the Penryn. Everyone else does have Penryn, but as it stands right now, that doesn't bring a whole lot to the table. But Penryn+9xxxGo card could be really useful. Not significantly more powerful than the 8 Series cards, but runs cooler, and the same goes for the Penryn

Apple: (in January) Hey guys! We have a new, faster, cooler laptop coming out in March!

Users: Woot! We want! WE WANT!!

<everyone waits for new MBP>
<no one buys current MBP>
<sales drop>
<stock prices lower>

Apple: Why did we tell them early? :(

I mean I could buy one now but I just got an ADN Student Membership. I'd really like to use that mega discount on the newest tech but (like most people on Mac Rumours) I need a new machine ASAP... My work and school is lagging on this broken windows laptop I'm using. plz apple save me from my woes! -_-()

I'm glad they are not releasing it yet. I really want/need one, but don't have the funds....yet

I expect they'll release one as soon as sales from the current generation drop off.

So uhh... not for at least a couple of months, as they're still selling like hotcakes.

See, I'm in the exact opposite boat.

I have the very last gen PowerBook G4, 1.67.

I won't buy a MBP until they REALLY update it. Updates, to me, fall into two categories: "specs" and "toys". The specs are updated all the time. Faster proc, more memory, bigger HD. To me, the "toys" are more exciting; iSight, backlit keyboard, case design, etc etc.

The two things SEVERELY lacking on the MBP are 3G Wireless/WiMax and (less importantly) TV Tuning. I really really really really want some sort of Cell connection before I buy my next MBP. It's sad than an iPhone is, in a way, more powerful than the best laptop in the world.

So, unfortunately for me -- since I really want to upgrade, and I have software that needs an intel chip -- I think I'm going to wait for a major refresh.

The problem with those features, scootermaster, is that they are only for a minority. Most of the people who buy a MBP aren't looking to capture TV, or surf over a specific carrier. If there was a universal 3G device, then I think they would go for it, but as it stands now, you have to have a different device for each carrier. So I don't think Apple will ever put one of those in the hardware of their machines.

Just like how they support BluRay, but haven't actually put any hardware in the computers. The next MBP that I purchase will have BluRay.

Also, don't get me wrong, I would love to have an integrated TV Tuner, and 3G wireless card, but I just don't forsee the market being huge on those devices.

I understand what you're saying. My point was that rev A Apple hardware generally has issues that need to be worked out, and early adopters get screwed most of the time buying
unproven hardware". So if Apple does release a new Macbook Pro tomorrow (or whenever) with all sorts of new "toy'" upgrades then I simply wouldnt purchase it until it was revised a bit. And this next revision wouldn't come for several months.

Now, I am NOT saying keep waiting for the next big upgrade every time a new machine comes out, because then nobody would ever buy anything! I bought my Macbook Pro the day they started shipping with Merom as there were heat and noise issues with Yonah (is that was was previous to Merom?). It was the second revision since moving to the Intel platform I think, and I've had almost zero issues with my machine. My Superdrive failed, but that was easily replaced, same with the battery.

As for your hopes to get cellular 3G included and TV Tuner capabilities I doubt it will happen. I would love to get TV-Tuner as I have a large monitor I use, and would use it for TV, I don't need the 3G so much since the computer rarely leaves my apartment.

I would love HDMI out instead of/in addition to the DVI. I dont think this will happen, but it would really make me consider upgrading my current perfectly good machine. Then I can output to my HDTV with only 1 cable for sound & video, I'm no snob about resolution and all that, but the 1 cable does appeal to me since the laptop wont always be connected to the TV.

you won't see the cell stuff until there is a unified solution, which i don't see happening, so never.

tv tuner? there are good usb solutions now, again something i don't really see happening, maybe on the imac, but even then.

if that is what you're waiting for to upgrade and you have immediate needs...i dunno what to tell you.

I don't have any real immediate "needs", I just wouldn't mind having a new one. It would make my life easier -- I think -- to have an Intel chip, but not having the 3G wireless pretty much makes that whole thing moot.

And I'm not as pessimistic as you are on the whole thing. I mean, they already have a [willing?] partner in AT&T, and if they're all buddied up with Intel, perhaps they'll do WiMax.

I think it'll happen, but perhaps not until the later-year refreshes. But people, especially biz travelers need that, and need it yesterday. Apple is falling behind other biz-class laptops in that regard.

The TV tuner is just a pipe dream. I know HP does it, and I'd love to see Apple do it.

they buddied up to at&t to get the iphone out. i'm sure they are counting down the days til the contract is up and they can release it everyone and pick up all the people who don't want to jailbreak their phone and won't go to at&t. i just don't see this as something on apple's objectives list, there are alternatives out there already that don't tie them to one service or another.

other than the macbook air, i don't see them pandering to business class users. they make computers for creative types. besides, look at their hardware. they do what they want, not what dell or hp is doing.

I don't necessarily want the newest version of MBP, but it'd be awesome if they lowered the prices of current gens a bit more to make room for the new!

That's weird. I've heard there was a problem with the PB that I have, but the Wifi sucks. I mean, when it works, it works great. But it often times won't connect to wireless networks that other computers can get. It will appear in the list, then not allow a connection, and be gone when you refresh the list. That annoyance is one of the bigger issues of why I'd want to switch. That and having a compiler that wants an intel chip.

Apple never gives a date when there new stuff will be released. You never see any roadmap of when products will get released. That is the Apple way.
