I've got an eVGA SLI motherboard, and as of now, the best tool for monitoring the temps of it is MyGuard, which is by Jetway, which is actually the company that makes the eVGA motherboard. Anyways, every so often (like once a week) when I load up MyGuard, I see that the CPU fan is NOT RUNING. I always power down the computer right away (unplugging it) and boot up, and everythings fine again.

Today, this happened again, while the side panel of the computer was off (housecleaning). The fan actually did stop, but I decided to test what would happen. The temps rose by around two degrees in the course of about two minutes, but after those two minutes, I got nervous and ****** it down.

I'm using the stock AMD cooler for a 3000+ Venice, so I don't want to always run my CPU like this with the cooler I have, but WHY does this happen, and is it dangerous?

The "Smart Fan" feature is enabled in the motherboard BIOS, but the idle temp is at 30. The computer usually idles around 25 (CPU temp) and the fan still runs, so I don't think its that.
 
The fan might be a low-quality one that stalls when it tries to go to low-speed. I'd replace it with a high-quality fan. It could also be a noise-reducing feature that turns the fan off when not needed- test it. Let it idle and cool off enough that the fan turns off, then start using the PC to heat up the core a bit- if the fan comes back on at that point, it may be a feature. Just make sure that your temperature auto-shutdown feature is enabled in BIOS for safety.

Thanks for the advice. I'm sure its one of those, and I'll test it out once it happens again.
