I've read that those with disabilities are as a whole happier than the average person. Presumably, they appreciate what things they still can do, and small tasks can be great milestones.

If they are born with it or it happens early. Otherwise, losing your health as an adult after being healthy all of your life and having all options open to you, then losing your career, your independence, your best income-earning years, having to apply for disability and welfare, and declare bankruptcy really sucks ass (unless you're a cop or firefighter, or some other unionized public employee/civil servant where the disability is almost as much as your regular income...e.g. $40K...$50K...$60K per year for life). Some day I'll get right with it...I hope.
