Overkill. What's the use of have a gigabit connection when you can still only pull stuff down from the Internet at 10Mbps. In 5 years, we will be lucky to be breaking 50Mbps Internet speeds.

Uh, they're slightly smaller than Montana, so...

yup... city wide wireless is available in Taipei, Tokyo, Seoul, Kaohsiung, Osaka, and a bunch of other tiny but rediculously futuristic asian countries.

okay, then why can't a state slightly smaller than Montana accomplish this,
Likewise, every other state...

Have you ever looked at a map?

And to add to it, population density.

You can have as much bandwidth as you want wherever you want if you have the money to pay for it. When you can't see your neighbors it's never going to be profitable for the local telco to run fiber for you (unless you eat the costs). Most people can't afford to have dedicated anything laid for them, but if they really wanted it & could afford it they could get whatever they wanted.

Most of the US simply doesn't have the population density to support the new network necessary for broadband. Much of the US can't even get cable TV, much less broadband internet.

There is some tradeoff to having all the land we do. Small islands with millions of people can have 100 MB connections in every home (right here in 2005), we can't.

I just read a story about a major city in CA(I wanna say LA, but cant remember) getting 300k wifi internet through the entire city. Google put up a bid to make it free with ads for teh whole city, or you could pay a nominal fee to get it ad-free.

First off gigabit ethernet has been around for ages & it doesn't take much to keep up with it. Granted no single drive today can keep up with it but it doesn't take much of an array to sustain 125+ MB/sec.

Second, 2010 is a long ways off - HD speeds will probably have long surpassed that.

Consider HD speeds 5 years ago vs today.

Even that is subject to population density & the likelihood of residents wanting to spend $45 a month on broadband.

They are rolling FIOS out in a few neighborhoods near me (Pittsburgh area), they're all high end neighborhoods. Where I live is certainly densely populated, but Verizon has no plans to bring it here.

Bottom line is the profit potential has to be there.

Of course... I wasn't trying to indicate otherwise. When I posted my response, I hadn't seen any of the messages you previously posted about population density, costs, etc (the page sat in a window a for a few minutes before I bothered to read/respond to it).
