I know it sounds crazy but even though REAL people can't use magic, kill dragon's, or make you a boffo suit of armor, they are still very interesting and fun to be around. So come on lard ass, put down the 2 liter of Code Red, the super size bag of Doritos, and start living a life that doesn't involve dwarfs, elves, or scantily clad women who are really 60 year old male pedophiles.

i loved EQ. i had a 2 level 50+ guys on it. wich i sold on ebay like 2 years ago or so. ;)

of course the graphics suck ass! the game is what 3 years old? what do you expect?

i thought they'd upgraded the gfx engine a couple times?

UO owns EQ anyway.

Yeah they upgraded the graphics a bit in some of the new expansions. But IMO, the new graphics actually look WORSE compared to the original EQ released in 1999. EQ is probably the most horribly bloated game in existance too. Did you know the game takes almost 500mb of ram when running with the advanced models on?

But then again, no one plays EQ for the graphics.

That's another point. I've heard the guys around here talking about selling and buying accounts on EBay. Now tell me, what is the fun in buying a character that has already been all buffed out and leveled? That's just moronic. Oh, oh, I wanna be a badass because in real life I'm a sexless nerd so I'll just buy a high level account and then spend the rest of my life being a mighty warrior in a wonderous land where I am powerful and the "women" all love me.

You either enjoy it or you don't... life goes on.

Putting people down who enjoy it just because you don't is sort of prickish. Why are you so angry about it?
Heh, maybe you just need an "easy target" to vent on?

This thread rocks!! I see the same stuff at work - where people are always talking about following the yellow paper cave path to the flaming oracle garden to fight some monster for most of their night. I see the same thing this dude does - one guy I work with went from normal to addict - he's above level 60 now and plays an average of 18 hours a day on his days off from work, 10 when he has to work (10 hour shifts). This has continued for 8 months - I almost feel bad for him.

He also has shared custody of his children with his ex-wife and when they come over to visit for the weekends he puts movies in the VCR to keep them occupied while he plays away.

I used to live, breathe, eat, and sleep EverQuest. Played it from phase 3 beta all the way until about 6 months or so into the Velious expansion. I'm glad I'm not playing anymore because it was basically consuming my life. And watching my old guildmates play nowadays is like watching a group of kids (to which you haven't explained the concept of sharing) fighting over toys, kind of sad sometimes. If nothing else though I'm somewhat thankful for EQ because that's how I met my girlfriend. She is absolutely wonderful and we've been living together for a few years now. :D

But thats only one aspect. After playing a few other MMORPG's, i've found that another thing that made EQ so addictive was its social aspect. Most people who play EQ have a lot of good friends in game who also play. Yeah, its probably better to make friends in real life instead of in a fantasy game. But still, it can be a lot of fun to have friends across the US and across the globe.

I played EQ for a lot longer than I would like to mention here. Its not much different than the people who sit in these forums and post all day long, or the people who sit on their sofa's all day long and watch tv. Some might call it a hobby, some might call it addiction. But as long as it doesn't get in the way of life, there isn't anything wrong with it. Sometimes its nice to get away from life for a little bit.

Phew, I know that Diablo2 feeling. Was worse then a crack addiction. Thankfully, its called formatting your hard drive and being too lazy to reinstall(well that and my body popped). But no reason to rag on the people who play the game when you don't like it or see a point to it. I'm sure there are many things you don't like that people find interesting.

Those are exactly the people I'm talking about. We had a departmental Christmas luncheon today and all the uber geeks were located at 2 tables that they had pushed together. All you could hear coming from their tabels were their tales of EQ. Well that and the bitching about the fact that the luncheon was mandentory and they couldn't go home on their lunch hour to play EQ.

Well that's good to hear. At least we now know that there are at least 2 people who play EQ who know what sex is really like.

Are you sure about that? They probably have cybersex in the game. In fact their marriage may have even been through the game.

Most of the guys around here that play it think that a vagina is a monster that lives in the swamps.

Isn't it? :Q

look, i don't care what my customer do or do i care to judge them as long as i'm making money...
i love games like this where it's easy to get items and then turn around to sell it for real hard cash.

so i actually played for a reason. it is actually easier to make money in diablo II... (until the clones ruined the market)

Yes, it is a creature that lives in the hot, steamy, and sometimes overgrown swamps that lie South of the Great Round Mountains.

Depending on the location, you may also have to encounter Treants in the Great Forest that lies just before it. :D

while i dont agree with getting wrapped up in it, it was a very fun game for people that like things like this

i played it for 3 years and finally got sick of it, but i was never obsessed with it

its fun once you get past the tedious stuff

Yes, and it swallows too.

I agree 100% with that. Problem is that most EQ players seem to be the type that become so involved in that game that they forget about real life.
Only a game like Everquest would people kill themselves over.

Here's an idea - to OT nefs, EQ whores, CS monkeys, and all nerds in general. I suggest a game called "NeverQuest" - because that's when you're going to find out what sex is like without having to give your credit card number or a wad of bills.

Funny you should say that. One of the guys here, and he doesn't know we all know this, hired a hooker a few months back. Well after the festivities he went to sleep. Woke up the next morning and his TV, DVD Player, Toaster Oven, and wallet were all gone. What a shocker. Why oh why didn't he have a glyph of warding guarding his stuff. Silly, silly wizard.

The fact that there are people out there willing to pay REAL money for fantasy characters is appalling. It only makes it worse when you hear stories of people paying hundreds or thousands for such a thing.

I would post an opinion but I am too busy reading EQ Flame and Rant boards.

Seriously though, I have been playing for 3 years now and like others mentioned, you like it or you don't. I think I am better off than others I know because I don't log in every day for hours on end, at most 3 hours 2 or 3 weekdays and like 6 hours Sunday night.

Of all the games out there, though, I imagine EQ probably takes more planning, skill, etc (for a computer game mind you). The high end encounters may require something like 60+ people; and getting 60+ people to work perfectly coordinated takes practice and patience.

But, many folks (myself included) find that very entertaining.

Dont bash the EQ players! They cant be any worse then people who sit at work all day surfing some forum filled with asshats who talk about everything from A to Z, then rush home so they can check to see how many people have responded to their post about how crappy their roommate is for smoking weed in the living room and then go to bed hoping tomorrow someone will have told them what to do about their girlfriend who is hanging out with some other guy......

See where this is going? Its easy to critize people who dont have the same interests as you.

And BTW, I have never played EQ. Never had the desire all that much. Now, Daggerfall is another issue......
