well, if your looking for a non violent game....your still in trouble really. While its true that you can play on servers that do not allow PK-ing (player killing) You will spend a large amount of your time in fights...even if you decide to be a cleric. fighting is the only way to get exp (besides quests, but they all involve fighting as well)....

If you dont want to be super offensive, shamans are good, they can heal, which other people will appareciate, and you can still whoops some tail ina fight if needed...clerics are highly wanted at any level, because there healing is unmatched.

However, For solo work, rangers and druids are great. Druis get Sprit of wolf early on, which allows them to travel much faster than anyone else...and with SOW, you can make mucho money casting it on people. It does get old after awhile though for peopel always asking "CAN I GET A SOW PLEEEEEASE"

Seems shaman would be the best choice.

As for whether my wife will allow our son to play, if he stays clear of the PK servers it may be acceptable to her. Will also depend on how gory the battle scenes are. She allows him to play some dragonballz games currently in which exp points are gained through battle.

Thanks for all the help.

the fighting scenes in EQ are not gory at all. when things die, they fall over and lie there. no blood that I remember.

Heh, there's really no battle scenes...i'm talking pre expansion here, shouldn't have changed though

but, the monsters (mobs) just step back and fling their head when they're attacked, some will do a little whiney call, and then the next thing you know they just collapse to the ground. No blood and gore or anything of that sort.

Patience is all you need man good luck, and if the shaman doesn't work out...everyone loves the druid. They can do it all
