I crave stability...and man am I in the wrong line of work. I'm the company's head "troubleshooter"...if something can't be fixed, they give it to me and say "fix it." I never know what I'm going to walk into every morning :D

Ever wish you had a job where you can count on doing the same thing every day? Seems it would be easier being bored than being afraid to look at your desk when you walk in in the morning.

Absolutely not. There is nothing worse than being bored and unchallenged all day. Trust me...

Sometimes I feel this way. I'm a network and system admin and technician and I usually don't know what I'm doing until minutes before I'm doing it (when shit hits the fan). On 4 out of 5 days a week I'm basically the only IT person at 2 school districts (14 buildings) and it is burning me out always running around trying to keep up with the issues.

The worst is when I drive somewhere for an issue, and then get called to a building in the complete opposite direction because of a higher priority issue. Many times it is before I even get out of the car.

While it keeps the job interesting, and I am always learning something new, I would much rather have consistency.

One thing that would be nice is to know that when the clock hits 5:00 (or whatever) that the day is DONE. Doesn't matter if the place is burning down, you walk out and it's not your problem.

<--- left work at 8:30 last night.

Actually yes.

One of the best jobs I ever had in my life was when I worked for Eckerds up in NY. The job was menial, boring and mind numbing, especially after having a taste of working my chosen career profession for a few years. And the pay royally sucked.

But the people I worked with made the job great. The time I had to think about shit was bar none awesome. The ways I found to keep myself inspired to continue on every single day to keep going was eye opening. And the best part is at the end of the day I was tired, and I felt like I did something.

That's what I'm talking about :D I'm all for a job where you have to be creative, but there's a difference between that and being the guy that catches all the crap other people don't want to deal with.

Oh well. It's nice to be employed, and at least the people I work with are truly appreciative when something gets fixed. I can expense all the Maalox I go through too.

I just wish I could get a respite from stress occasionally. I romantically think that doing a 9 to 5 would be easier and I would be able to unwind but the reality is even after a week of vacation I get antsy and want to do something challenging or crazy.

I complain of time and stress all the time and I am still taking on more projects and clients.

This week on "Fritzo bitches about a non-issue", we see our main character pining for a life of boredom and monotany.

"I never know what I'm going to walk into every morning!" he starts. "Seems it would be easier being bored... ever wish you had a 'drone' job?" Haha, that Fritzo... what a hoot!

Join us next week when he complains that his new TV is just too darn big to fit in his living room.

That's one of the issues I have.

I stay really busy and stressed, but occasionally when things slow down a bit I feel like I am not doing anything, so I take on more projects. Needless to say then everything picks back up and I have even more to do and tend to get even further behind.

I think it depends...I am old enough now that I could totally deal with a boring job ;)
I certainly enjoyed jobs with adventure and uncertainty when younger.

Like the school district example though...it would irritate me when I had to deal with problems that could be avoided with proper preparation and budgeting, but if instead you end up being the person constantly staying late and running around...ugh.

That's what I like. I enjoy challenges, and change, but I want to be done at 8 hours, every day. Overtime can go to hell. . Money doesn't cover my forever lost time. I could conceive of jobs I love so much that extra time doesn't feel like work, but you have to luck into that kind of thing.

There is something worse than being bored and unchallenged all day, and that is being completely and totally burned out on your job and totally dreading coming in to work every day. I think I'd take a boring, repeatable job at this point if it paid the same.

It is nice to just turn it off, the work part of your brain. Go home and really delve into the home life and not have any worries. Those that can do that seamlessly are truly fortunate.

I rarely if ever do OT for this reason. The one thing about my job is the broadcast starts at 1pm and ends at 9pm, ever day. I also like going in not knowing what the day has in store because every one is different.

I wish I had this ability. I think about work way too much when I'm home.

It doesn't help that there is always someone working on off hours (nights/weekends) that is calling or emailing me for something. The worst is getting woken up before my alarm clock goes off because email is down or some shit.

My wife hates that. I'll wake up at 2am and run down to my PC after getting a brainstorm on how to fix something. She's like "Who the hell does that???? Get your ass back to bed!" When you have certain types of employment, it just seems to envelop your life and you can't turn it off.

Well, I guess that's what retirement is for.

I've done both, and both have their benefits.

One issue with 'your type' of job is that many in that position get little to no recognition. In other words, a project-based environment lets you get to the end and celebrate, and look at all you accomplished.

A break-fix job is just.. fixing things back to working. Maybe a few minutes of thanks, but at the end of the day management tends to not acknowledge the people who keep things running.

Well if you ever go into the IT consulting business and need a consultant, let me know (since we're in the same city). :D
I have an empty office in one of my buildings. Start your own! Ill give you the first three months free!!!

I sadly am not one of those that can. I had an employee steal from me a few months ago and it really got to me. I have a hard time not investing my passion into every thing I do. It makes me good at what I do but it also makes the tough times even tougher.

I wish I could alternate days.
1 day of thoughtless manual labor, 1 day of thoughtful non-manual labor.
