I have a heat gun but many situations call for dipping in boiled water.
Avoiding tamper labels, heat-sensitive components, and layering tubing, among other things. A fan can blow the evaporated heat away while the water surface is still very hot and I can dip a cable right up to the line without significant warming of the attached device.Like what? Even in delicate situations, I've been able to hold the heat gun a decent distance away and shrink the tubing without getting anything too hot. It takes a bit longer, but its safe.
The kind you can throw a bic lighter in tend to have a more workable flame (easier to get it small enough to not instantly vaporize solder). And, you know...you just throw a lighter in them.
