Is it useful or just an expensive toy? Out of the people who actually go out and search for "lost treasures", very few people actually come up with anything. I guess it's a neat toy to have if you have the money to blow.
Don't know much about actual detectors but I heard from a long time "treasure finder" that a good place to look for stuff is around old farms. It turns out that people use to bury their money to hide it from others but they usually forgot where they put it. He has come up with some valuable stuff. Just make sure you get the owner's permission first.
The person I'm thinking of getting it for would probably only use it on occassion. Not HARD CORE, everyday. I guess you'd then say more as an expensive toy.
My uncle lives in Washington DC and he's found all sorts of cool stuff, mostly old money and such. But he once found a Civil War belt buckle (part of soldier's uniform).
