Ever toss an ice cube in a deep fryer with hot (400F) oil?

It's neat watching that ice cube sit on the bottom still in solid form. It will sit there for quite some time before going up in a fury of bubbles and froth!

Quite an amazing ruckus from such a small amount of ice. If you have a large fryer tub or partially filled smallish one this is reasonably safe. ;)

Now imagine the ice in a large fully frozen turkey and why it's so bad to do this. :D

It may be but not going to matter too much when it gets changed frequently. ;)

It's cheap say compared to QuinSyn. ;)

Well a few hundred people put frozen turkeys into hot oil yesterday. Does it go boom like that?

Never an ice cube. But, I've put plenty of frozen food into fryers in the past.

What's unique about the ice cube is it will sit there sometimes for a full minute before erupting! You can see the ice (at freezing) sitting in oil that's over three hundred degrees hotter.

Water in hot oil? No.

Doesn't that end up spattering all over the place when it starts to melt? I mean, that's exactly why you don't put water on a grease fire, it just gets worse.

I guess if you did it in a turkey deep fryer it wouldn't be too bad...

No, ice cube in hot oil. It's a big difference as it will just sit there for a while doing nothing. Then it will cut loose with the fury of a herd of tator tots getting dropped in at once! :D

I deep fried some freshly cooked macaroni once.

That was a mistake.

Tasted terrible, and all rubbery. Plus it took a week to clear up all the damage to kitchen.

I remember, back in Navy basic training, when they gave us a demonstration of how NOT to put out a deep fat fryer fire (try saying that 5 times fast!! ;) ).

They had a 55 gallon drum of fryer oil, about 1/2 full, and set it on fire. Nice little fire going, flames coming 2-3 feet out of the top of the steel drum. Then they took what was basically a piece of pipe, about 15 feet long, with a t-handle on one end, and a soup can on the other end, filled that can with water, and dumped it into the fire.

Fire dampened down a little bit, sputtered a little bit......and then a freakin' fire ball, which, once it escaped the confines of the drum, spread out about 5-6 feet diameter, and shot a good 20-30 feet in the air, before it dissipated!!

They then reminded us that the overheads (ceilings) on board ship are generally 10 feet high, max......and that when that fireball hits the overhead, it will then spread out and pretty much lay waste to anything within it's reach, including the fire team that just dumped water onto the fire! D:
