Raiding is clearing certain dungeons with an organized team, usually your guild. Pre expansion there were 20 and 40 man raid instances. Now there are 10 man and 25 man raid instances in the expansion. There are usually 8-12 bosses in an instance (dungeon). You have to have a raid leader that directs people on wtf to do, and it is usually very challenging and time consuming to clear these places and kill all the bosses. Learning a boss can take hours, days, weeks with constant wiping and reattempting. The best loot in the game is obtained by raiding. The other course is doing mass pvp grind which gives you pretty good loot too.

This is why I play Eve instead of WoW. Really though I hardly play eve anymore either, I just play when I want to go kill people and have fun. But unlike WoW I don't have to play eve to get better. I can play once or twice a month and still train skills while not playing. It is perfect for me.

Raiding is when you group up with other players to beat a dungeon together. It can consist of anywhere from 5-40 people in WoW and can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 4+ hrs.

Yup thats what I pretty much do now. I play CS and some wc3 and log off whenever I want to.

I started playing MUDs way back when, moved to DAoC (skipped the whole EQ thing), bowed out of Camelot, played multiplayer Battletech (no, not the MechWarrior series), then recently started playing LOTRO. I'm 33 years old and I can't say that those multiplayer games have impacted any part of my life in a detrimental manner. I get out and about, spend time with my wife, hold a fulltime job, run 4 times a week, etc... and still play my games. It's all about time management and the setting of proper priorities.

While I applaud your excellent time management abilities, not everyone does the same thing. I tend to obsess over new things like this, but I also am aware of my shortcomings. It's similar to the reason recovering alcoholics often do not drink at all. For you it's easy to play however you want when you want. For me it's an all or nothing endeavor. So with WoW, it's nothing.

ya, when i was in college back when UO came out, we had 3 people in our class drop out due to sitting at their apartment playing that game. one guy of the guys that was in my classes was so bad he lost like 30 lbs and looked like a zombie. a year later he stopped playing and got back in school. the other 2 never came back. id say theres quite a bit of addiction when a person has an addictive personality.

But dammit, that's not the easy way out. We have to blame something!

Society turned me into a WoW addict...and then it slept with my girlfriend and kicked my dog.

Tigole raped my grandmother. :(

Whoa, you can take 25 characters to fight a boss & still lose? So is this game impossible to beat if you were totally antisocial online & chose to play it by yourself?

Ahhh so true... I was like that in the Diablo 2 days

I wondered myself lots of times "why am I still playing this? I dont have fun anymore"

No, it's impossible to beat because there is no end.

Besides, MMORPG = Massively MULTIPLAYER Online Role Playing Game

Yup it never ends because they always release new content and with expansions all the weeks or months of actual game time you put into getting the best gear in the game becomes obsolete. And no you can't solo anything in WoW, you need a raid team of 25 skilled people that actually play good to down bosses. Go to wow wiki and read up on the strats and watch some videos ;)

WoW is not that damned hard to 'put down' I play with 5-6 buddies who i've known for probably 15-20 years now. Two of them moved away, one to NYC the other to Seattle WA, and one traveled weekly, but WOW was a way to keep in touch and still hang out, albeit virtually... we play on two servers, and play a few nights a week after work. If work happens to run late, or stuff happens with people who live locally we just push it back to another night...no rush to level up, enjoy the content don't rip through it.

I don't see how people can be so addicted to this game...I played since launch, played for a year, quit for a year, and picked it back up in december of last year...its fun, something to do on those boring week nights, but weekends...i'm out riding my motorcycle or working on my car.

Actually, you can easily solo your way to level 70 and still have decent gear, but you'd be missing out on quite a bit of content.

You raid Footlocker for [Nike Air Jordans of Extreme Running] with +5 Comfort and -5 Smell with a bunch of your buddies defeating the evil Donut-wielding Mall Security Guard?

Lol. Donuet-wielding guard special attack, chocalate glaze + sweat beads AOE every 45 seconds.

Pull him to the courtyard and use LoS issues to stop the sweat beads! Just watch out, because after 10 minutes, he'll cast Call For Backup.

There was a time I considered myself a hardcore WoW player. Though I don?t recommend it, it is possible to have a RL and play extended hours of WoW. I continued with my social life and remarried during that time. But, I was living in a cloud. I didn?t get much sleep back then.

My mains are in a raiding guild. Though I enjoyed raiding, I stopped almost as quickly as I began. The time and commitment required caused problems in my relationship, family and life.

IMO, your girl should find that happy middle ground (for all) between RL and this game. It does exist. BTW: Your gal and I are the same in height, weight and hair color. :)

Heres what you do (my friend does this with his gf):

Roll a 2v2/3v3 team together (actually the 2v2 is with me & him, the 3v3 is with me, him, his gf). Better than raiding for pvp gear, MUCH less time commitment, not that bad. I used to be in a pre-tbc naxx cleared hardcore raiding guild... but now I just log on a few hours a week, sometimes just to run around and then log off. BGs and arena are fun, but you're not bound to any certain schedule. Some weeks we only get on and play our requisite 10 games and then stop for the week- and my toon is in all epics from the 3v3 now so I can't complain. You might have to put in a few hours at first but once you get around 2200-2300 rating, you can just play your 10 games and quit for the week, assuming you stayed in roughly the same spot (didn't drop too far).

I ran a few heroics with some people though and now the top raiding guild on the server is trying to recruit me :(. Raiding seriously messed up my life last year though, so I don't really want to go back...

Heh I forgot to tell you last night that another reason why my character never went up in levels is because I almost quit again :p. I was so bored with playing that I literally couldn't even get myself to load the game up. The only reason I started again is something drove me to desire better gear on my rogue. I guess I just can't stand being "the noob in greens" :p.

Oh and those shoulders eluded me once more :(. But the run was fun... practically felt like we were a guild.

EDIT:

if someone wants to piss there youth away "gaming" rather than getting ahead in life then more power to them.
