Ever seen this on a car - 2013 Mazda CX5 - hole in firewall around steering wheel

My Mazda CX5 (driven by my business partner, though I own it), has a very unique feature that I have not seen in any car before..

There is a hole / gap that exposes the interior to the outside around the steering wheel. He noticed it 2 weeks ago as the AC was not cooling the car fast enough and found a hot air stream coming at him at speed.

Turns out around the steering column where it meets the firewall (surrounding tilt wheel area) there is a big enough gap that one can see the road surface. This I have NOT seen in any car before. This means at speed, the car is not insulated from the outside, there is a constant stream of air / noise / water / dust coming in through this gap between the steering column, the dash and the firewall.

Any ideas.. I am scaling it up to Mazda today.

Its either a gasket or a panel that is missing or dropped off.. either case they have to fix it, and probably will have to take the whole dash apart to get to it.

Aside from the giant hole in the firewall, what are his thoughts on the car? Wife and I test drove one last weekend (Touring FWD A/T) and both really liked it from that brief experience.

When you talk to them, if you call the missing part the steering shaft/column boot, they're probably going to understand you better.

You're missing this:

(This is just an example of what you're missing--ignore the arrow.)

So I have yet to drive 'my' car.. because patrick drives it all the time. He likes the car, except for 1 thing, the car is slow to accelerate to the freeway (automatic transmission), but once its got to speed its fine, but its kinda slow to accelerate upto 55mph.

He has been getting 35 mpg on that car, and he likes it. Its trunk space is enough for 3 large suitcases. I think we paid 26 for a loaded CX5 without the leather, so its got the navi + BLIS + HID + HD radio etc. A great deal IMHO.

I did notice that the car did not come with a rear trunk privacy screen so we had to buy that one separately but otherwise it has been a good car. Its a tad bit noisy to start up (GDI engine) but soon quietens down and purrs like a kitten.
