I've seen advanced students of martial arts get into fights. I've also seen fairly advanced boxing students get into fights.

CONSISTENTLY, the guys that take up boxing KICK some major ass when they've fought--even against much bigger opponents. We're talking major blood spillage, broken noses, etc within a few punches.

The "martial artists" I've seen fight look girlish/sissy for the most part. It has been actually been pretty funny to watch. Their opponents, for the most part, got the better of them while scuffing it, until it was broken up.

I also fought martial artists. At first their style caught me off guard, b/c you're expecting a punch and instead they kick or lunge punches which have no force as their shrieking. Once I quickly figured out what they were up to, it was no contest.

...........To be fair, I've seen a straight-off-the-boat CHINESE martial arts master who would be a VERY intimidating opponent. His style was VERY "street". His students got disqualified at tourneys b/c that's how he trains him to fight. But they always won their matches until sooner or later they'd get disqualified. I hung out a while at his dojo and learned his most devasting techniques...........The master, though, said he would ALWAYS try to talk his way out of a fight, unless it was total self defense. He even had a knife drawn on him once and talked his way out by handing the money in his wallet instead of kicking the guys ass, as he's also a knife fighting expert.

I think theoretical martial arts fighting like Tae Kwando is rather useless in the real world. If you can find a style that's very street oriented, then I think that would be the most useful.

This is an unfair generalization.

Yes, it is true that "sport" TKD is not very useful in a defense situation. However, there is traditional TKD that can be extremely useful in fighting situations.

The problem is that many people associate these arts with with the fancy jumping and flying techniques. What is the real reson for a high jump side kick? If you understand that that technique was developed to dismount riders, or to cover a large distance, you would know that it is not the best thing to use in an up close and personal conflict.

Keep in mind that in the true sense of the words...

Boxing is a martial art
Grappling (Gracie Ju-Jitsu) is a martial art
Wrestling is a martial art
Modern Weaponry (Guns) is a martial art

Any true marial artist should explore these. Every body type has it's own art that it is best suited to. And a true martial artist would not say that they don't need a gun, or that their art is better than someone elses. If nothing else, a martial artist should know how to operate weapons that are available to the time period. That is what true martial arts are all about.

the most ownage i've ever heard was about some dood taking on 6 samoens at once and kicking their asses at a club/bar....i was like "yeah right whatever!"....to my amazement the girl that i was dating had a cousin who was a ex special forces green beret jungle warefare expert seargent trained in "jeet kwon do." one day someone was like oh ur dating so and so? better treat her right man or else her cousin will keel you cuz i was there when he took on 6 samoens at once and sent them to the hospital...i was speechless. BTW he played the black ranger in the power ranger series doing all the stunts and fight scenes.

the most ownage i've ever SEEN was this 12 year kid who wieghed like 130 and pushed to the ground by some 17 year old 170lb kid....the 12 year old got up and started to use his "san so" arts and got him to the ground and then proceded to break his arm!

"san so" or however its spelled is kinda like hong kong style street fighting....they teach how to fight with whatever it takes to win in the shortest time...hit the throat, bread basket, gouge eyes, etc...they do a lil of grappling as well.

my friend also was a 6th degree black belt...and got into a bar fight once....usually he kicks ass but this time his oppenent was semi-pro boxer. my friend got a nice punch to his face first and the boxer didnt even blink....my friend got scared shitless. it was pretty much a stand off cuz the boxer got close to take away his kick range.

I remember when i got in a fight with my friend Chun -- I roundhouse kicked her and then followed up with a quick jab. She blocked my jab and came back at me with a flurry of kicks, and i got all jacked up. But then I threw a fireball at her and stunned her ass. I proceeded to do a uppercut which hit her four times! Then I won the fight.

I've always avoided fighting...I'd like to think I could take a beating and that I'd be a pretty slippery wrestler (I am sort of quick) if I had to though. I'd probably fight pretty dirty if I had too though.

I don't know if these stories on here are true or what, but that one about the kid triple teamed and then having one guy come at him with a screw driver? At first I thought, no way...but it isn't that outlandish I suppose since I have a somewhat similar, but I feel more plausible story.

I didn't witness this, only the aftermath. So its second hand, albeit from one of the parties involved. This guy named Nate who was a few years older than me in high school was pretty much the star of our wrestling team. He was a beefy guy, fairly nice though. He definately looked strong, I wouldn't fvck with him. There were a couple punks that I hated that came at him in the locker room after gym class and he laid 'em out pretty good. One of them tried to hit him with a bike chain and he tossed him not sure what happened to that guy, the other guy he threw head first into the floor. Put a nice gash on his head, I saw that kid afterwards...he was none to happy. I hated both those punks so I was pretty happy with the results.

He talked about it the next day because I also had drafting class with him, I guess they just came at him for pretty much no reason. Calling him a fvcking jock or something. I knew those kids were trash, but I didn't think they were stupid enough to pick a fight with some one that much tougher than them.

Does the ultimate fighting challenge count?

I did see one of my high school buddies in action once. He was a blackbelt at the time. Some rival schoolies were harassing us and chased us. He was in my car with another dude. I stopped the car he got out. I was looking in my rear view as I spun the car around and I got to see him kick two guys in the head, then he slipped and fell on some ice.

So, still being in the car, I drove at the crowd (about 10 guys plus DAn getting beat down) and aimed for the middle and ran over about half of them. I missed dan (intentionally) then spun around and ran over some more. The next pass they all ran and Dan got in the car.

Funny enough, we went and got some more friends for the fray. IT was all ended by this thin wiry guy on our side. Can't recall his name but we were all circlcled up and this big guy was taunting our guy. Our guy reached his limit and punched the big guy. To our amazement, our guy hit him three more times in the face as the guy was on the way to sleeptown! It was freakin amazing! I have never seen anything so fast in all my life.

That's my story, believe it or not!

back in college i was in the martial arts club for 4 years. basically a salad bowl of different styles coming together to teach each other our respective arts. we train for about 2 hours then have full contact sparring for about half an hour. i've seen some of my members get into bar fights and oh man...its pretty scary. they dont just sit back and take a stance and wait for their opponent to strike. they just in there and start hitting throats, pulling hair, twisting arms, locking joints.

what i've learned for my tenured there is that martial arts helps you react to a situation. it may look cheap, such as punching a guy in the throat if he shoves you but we learned how to be efficient. i saw our president, small asian guy w/ hapkido and muay thai background, beat the guy easily 1 1/2 his size. he took a punch to get inside and palmed the guys nose. im sure he broke it cause blood was gushing out.

another thing...tai bo is not martial arts.

i'm always amazed at the unusually large amount of martial arts experts on this board.

the average ATOTer can helicopter kick 3 guys at the same time, install a new motherboard, and doesn't have the balls to ask a girl out.

This is what I'm talking about... Practical martial arts isn't a crazy spin kick to disarm someone... Its punching a guy in the throat because you want to end a fight as quickly as possible.

Tae bo certainly isn't a martial art, but my Sifu said he that back in the 80's he used to regularly spar the guy who started it, Billy Blanks, and that he was a very very good fighter.

I remember this one fight I was in junior year in high school, it was one of those "meet you down the street at 3pm deals" with a kid that vandalized my car, actually it wasn't even that kid because he was too much of a wuss and called my mother so I wouldn't fight him but rather his friend who was more willing to fight....

The whole ordeal lasted maybe 10 minutes...I walked into it smoking a cigar, plenty of people thought that was pretty funny....it started out with him hitting me in the head, me kicking him in his ass, and then turned into a wrestling match where he got punched a bunch of times...honestly it was stupid but looking back on it rather laughable...

we both got up, I was ready to keep going, he said that I was tougher than he thought and that he was tired....so we stopped....however I was glad it ended as my head was spinning and once the adrenaline starts to wear off you feel very tired, I almost couldn't drive home...

I have seen some other fights and been in one other myself but the outcome was pretty much the same....never seen anything elaborate though.

I had fights in school when I was younger.

I got some distance I think and he backed off. Then I ran full pelt in to him and jumped and did a flying kick at him. Knocked him out. After that he didn't really want to fight. I kick pretty well and I am fast. I've had some training in varous MA's.

I've beaten on a few guys in self defense. That was as real as it gets when not sparring or a ring.

Nothing fancy on my part. Just solid kicks and punch's. No need to go crazy and spin 720 and land a kick. Looks DAM SWEET! But I wouldn't do it. If you can land it then good on you in a street fight!

I've not seen any Kung Fu fighting in the old sense.

i don't know if any other practitioners see it this way but every fight or sparring match i've been in things usually slow down a bit in the beginning. like before the swinging and breaking starts you have all the options layed out. i see openings when i fight. then you jump in and let ur training react to the situation.

anybody else feel this? like this one time at a friend bday party these idiots came to start trouble. a few of them tried to come in the front door at the same time to grab at my friend. so you have 4 guys trying to squeeze through with their arms strecthed out. i thought to myself, so i break a wrist? i can grab a guy, pull him foward and knee in the ribs. but i decided to slam the door on their arms. haha, well they got pissed and broke a few windows and drove off...cops eventually caught them.

I run up and punch him just playing around and he just naturally blocks it now. It's scary because I am starting to feel that even if I tried to hit him, he wouldn't have a problem blocking it. I've always been able to take him down because of my OBA (older-brother advantage), but I dunno how much longer that would last. He's starting to learn how to throw his weight now.

HAhaha, thats me! Woot!

I been trollin' on the forums for a few days, wanted to start posting... replaying to my brothers admission is a good way to start.

As to the martial arts thing, certain styles are far more useful for practical self defence than others. Some styles just teach for tournament style sparring, and that doesn't really help you a ton. My sensai teaches Butokukan Karate, Aikido, Shodukan, and I can tell you right now that anybody who has taken martial arts from him would destroy somebody without serious fighting training easily. (fighting training being boxing, a bunch of fights, martial arts, etc.)

One of the main things with martial arts is that it makes you think about the fights differently. You know what to expect, and if you've been doing sparring in practice a lot you get very used to taking a full out punch in the face. I practice with a 6' 7" Russian who refuses to spar with anybody but me because he is afraid he will hurt them. After practicing with him for awhile, if it came down to a street thing I would tear up anybody who hasn't been in a ton of fights, they aren't going to be prepared for somebody going all out on them and either ignoring or blocking their attacks.

I started taking martial arts at 18. Until I started doing it I didn't think much of the kids in high school who had black belts. Now that I've been seriously training for a year and a half on this stuff, I can tell you that if you train as an adult, there is a whole different league. My teachers are so fast its downright scary, and not only that but they've been sparring daily for 15-20 years, done a lot of tourne's, and overall spent a good portion of their life fighting. Going up against that is not only going up against their moves, their styles, and their crazy speed, but its also going up against somebody who has a helluva lot more experience in fights than you.

thats exactly what one of my sifu said! he asked me whats my favorite move and i told him a spinning back kick. fast and can break a few ribs if hit squarly. then i asked him what his and he said he doesn't have one...that if he gets into a fight he fights to kill or be killed. phew..!

Indeed. A good boxer is lethal standing up. But it can be to their down fall if they are too use to 'boxing' as they won't defend leg or any take downs. And once on the ground they'll most probably be a duck out of water, if they have no ground skills.

A guy I know has fought about 10x in the past few years. Most was in self defence and some in anger. He won 9 of them and he lost 1. The he lost he was in a club and with this girl he just met. This guy came from beind or so and head butted the guy I know. He was dazzed and went down. Got up and was looking for the dude. Had a bit of a rock and they both got chucked out.

He is about 5"6 weighs about 140lbs if that and has beaten on guys that were 6"2+ and 200lbs. He just punch's to the face well. And YES his hands were BRUISED BADLY after every fight he was in. Makes me laught that this small guy beats on these bigger guys. People are shocked when he floors other guys.

Haven't seen any super-ridiculous fancy-schmancy moves like back-flip/wall-walking kicks...butI have seen a guy sweep another guy's legs out from under him and then axe kick him in the face when he was down.

...fight was pretty much done after that.

As for me....the only martial art "moves" I've used (in the one real fight I've been in) were a couple of blocks and punching counters. The training really helped to keep me level headed and able to react quickly in that fight though.

I can't wait until I'm in a more permanent living situation so that I can find someplace to start up again.
