So for a feel good thread, post any experiences where you saved a life.

Didn't have to be "pulled my buddy from burning car"

Could be "buddy was in real trouble and I took action by calling 911". To me that is saving life. One took action to save another.

When i was about ~7? I pretended/played the roll of a junior life guard at our neighborhood pool. We had some there, and we just kind of hung out (i can now imagine what a pain it must have been to hang out with a 7 year old :p)

anyways, nothing ever happened really around there, until one day, I saw a mother leave this little girl around 3/4 years near the deep end on her own with no floaties....all of a sudden, the girl moves a bit, and falls in

the mother doesn't even notice; i yell at one of the lifeguards to go get her in there, so while he dove in i called 911 :)

she was fine

I saved my family from a house fire a few years ago.
I was up all night chatting on IRC (I never stay up and chat on IRC) and I saw smoke all around and I woke up my family. A few minutes later the roof on top of my parent's bed collapsed onto their bed and fire was all over the house.

We couldn't see the fire because it was inside the walls.

Funny thing is I moved next door to the guy I was chatting on IRC with that night. Good old warez on 28.8 :) I remember I was downloading Beavis and Butthead off of him that night too.

no but my life was saved by a school (college) nurse when she told me via phone to definitely go to the hospital when I had abdominal pains after being hit there. I was just going to sleep it off. Turns out I ruptured my spleen and would've bled to death if I "slept it off".

details?

I remember a time when a dear friend had his face swell up with two small punture wounds near his right eye. spider bite. Life threatening? Probably not, but I still helped with ice and looking out for him ready to call EMS.

Rather not on the latter, but my best friend pulled me out of a burning wooden cabin although I didn't quite escape unharmed, smoke inhalation (I was passed out, he dragged me) and 3rd degree burns on 80% of my feet

My friend and I saved a little girl out in the surf a few summers ago. We were walking toward where we parked our cars after an evening surf session and noticed a young girl screaming for us to help her little sister who couldn't have been more than 6. She was out over her head and being pulled out into 4-5' breaking waves. We rushed out and saved her. If we hadn't been there that girl probably would have drowned. There were no lifeguards in the area we were surfing because they are only there during the summer and only until a certain time of day.

I did police work for a few years when I was mobilized after 9-11, so yeah, I've done my part. I've intervened in a few suicides, got to locations in the nick of time to stablize accident victims waiting for Fire/EMT to arrive, stopped domestic battery situations that could have gone much farther south, etc. It was a busy two years, I'll say that much.

There was one time though that I thought I was doing some good and it ended up backfiring on me. I responded to the ER for a 4 month old child that stopped breathing. They resuscitated her several times waiting for the life flight chopper to land on the helipad. The parents were distraught to no end and could not ride on the Life Flight with their child. It was a two hour drive to where their child was to be flown. I overheard them talking about how they were out of gas in their car and had no money to get to the hospital. I paid out of pocket to fill their tank and gave them the rest in case (almost $40 or so total). I escorted them at high speed through post to the interstate where I'd called ahead for a State Trooper escort for the rest of the way. I found out three weeks later that the father admitted to shaking the child who died later that night of complications.

Freshman year in college I came across a senior on another hall of the dorm who usually picked on me and was snobbish but this time he was choking instead of joking. His blank stare while grasping his throat as he fell to the ground caught me off guard at first but I was trained in the Heimlich Maneuver so I performed it on him and was able to dislodge the blockage which was rather amazing considering he was huge and I was rather small. He immediately ran off almost like he was embarrassed but he was always very nice and friendly to me after that day.

I had my life saved when I was 14 by the EMS. They were amazing.

I've been a part of quite a few life saving events, but I can't take sole credit for a specific one. It's always a joint effort.

I donated blood once...that's like 5 lives, right?

1 unit usually isn't enough for even 1 person.

True that. Hell, one unit is good enough to take care of a really, really bad paper cut and that's about it. Or at least one small child, which will live and grow up to have other children one day, so I guess you're saving those future lives in some way......I guess. ;)
