Ever paid to have a tree cut down?

If it was a large tree, say 50-100ft, how much was it? The stupid guy that built the neighborhood left a few worthless (no cover) tall trees in place and large branches or the entire trees are falling when it storms.

Depends

That sounds about right, we spent almost $2000 to have two tall trees taken down after we bought our house.

Do they happen to be in your electric lines? The electric company came and cut down a tree for me. Cost was nothing. They even moved it out of my driveway. All I had to do was cut it up after it was down. :D My neighboor wound up cutting it up, because he wanted it for firewood.

Nope, my dad was a logger his whole life. He taught this girl to run a chain saw.

It's pretty expensive, and the cost will vary depending on how tricky it is to cut (like, where power lines and buildings are in relation to the tree.)

I had a bradford pear tree split down the center after 2 days of heavy rains last year. It was a 30-40 ft tree with a huge canopy.

Rather than hire someone, I got my 16 inch bar chainsaw out and cut it all up into firewood. I then rented a chipper/shredder and chipped up all the branches (with the help of 2 neighborhood kids). It took all day to do, but I saved an assload of money. On the plus side, I gave the woodchips away to an older couple to use on their landscaping and even delivered and unloaded them for the people.

A few months ago I rented a stump grinder and finally got the rest of that stump out of the ground.

Uhm, why on earth would you pay $500-$1000 when you can do it yourself with a chainsaw, and then keep the firewood OR sell it to pay off the chainsaw?

Often not legal in cities. You also very frequently need a permit before you remove a tree, sometimes even to just make major pruning cuts on large trees.

Call your electric company. If its growing in the power lines, they should cut it/trim it for free.

Not a good idea

Fresh woodchips will suck the nutrients out of soil.

because the people you pay are good at not dropping giant pices of tree on your neighbors houses and cars.

It usually cost me $400- $600 to get a tree cut down in an emergency. However the same guy that cuts those trees does our other tree work for $800 a day. He calls me when his schedule is slow and he does it for the "minimum" he needs to make in a day. He usually takes out about six trees and trims quite a few others.

yeah I don't think I would mess with a 50-100ft tree in my backyard... just one window on my house would be worth the $500, let alone any 'real' damage...

None of the trees are in the power lines. The only tree (maybe) in my yard is halfway between my house and the house next to me. With the houses probably 8 feet on either side of the tree, I won't be attempting to do it myself. Actually I'm not sure who's yard it's in, but thought about seeing if the neighbor would split the cost to remove. I had heard someone paid $600 to have one removed. It just seemed a little excessive to me for the job.

Is the tree affecting your neighbors also? If so you can probably get them to chip in.

I checked on having a 20 ft tall tree removed from my property because it was growing into my neighbor's roof. Would have cost me about $500 so I bought a chainsaw for $150 and cut it down myself.

I imagine they let them sit for awhile first. We put them in a huge pile behind their shed. The chips filled the back of my truck.

We went through the same thing. We got quotes from 2 official tree cutting places and they wanted ridiculous amounts of money. Like 1500-2000 for a couple trees. Only 1 was really big, and even then it wasn't huge. So we didn't bother.

I talked to a neighbor from up the street who knew someone that did it cheap. We ended up getting that guy to cut the big one down for $300. I had him just knock it down and not chop it up. I chainsawed it up myself and had someone else come and take the wood away who uses it for heating in the winter. Saved a lot of money that way, although it was a fair amount of work to cut the tree up. I have a wood chipper and chipped all the branches up into mulch.

So I'd recommend asking around and see if anyone knows of any cheaper people. A guy I work with knew a cheap guy too, but I never got around to calling him and just went with the guy my neighbor recommended.
