Yes, 19, threw a bunch of stuff in the back of the truck, brought my ATM card, and started driving.

I moved back, though.

I moved from the midwest to East Bay California and I only knew 1 person.....does that count? I was 22 years old I think, I had just graduated college and the computer/Internet boom was in full effect overe here.

When my fiance (gf at the time) graduated from college, we loaded up her car and she drove from Indiana to Minneapolis. She didn't know a single person there but wanted to pursue design work. Bravest thing I've ever seen someone do.

Moved from Malaysia to Indiana for school (19). Then from Indiana to Boston for work (22). Both times I didn't know anyone where I was going.

Spartan, thats a hell of a move. Having an ocean between you and you're family and friends would surely be a little frightening.

I'm guessing you had some understanding of the language before hand?

Well, English is my first language (that's what I speak at home). I think it's more of a culture shock. But lots of movies and TV shows from the US (even if they don't really portray genuine American life) helped ease me into the change.

I can imagine. Its neat how people from other countries can learn so much about the english language by simply watching TV.

I have a few friends in Sweeden who have never been to Canada/UK/US... etc, and they speak english very well and they have TV to thank for it. T.V. finally did something contructive/educational.

Moved from nova scotia to alabama when I was 23 because I needed a job.

Nice and stressful but it's good for you.

Yep, age 22. Left because where I was at was a deadend as far as career goes; I was going crazy and just had to get out. Packed my bags in my car, left for L.A. having absolutely no idea what I was going to do once I got there. I was scared as hell but excited and determined just the same. I stayed in a cheapo hotel a couple of nights then found a weekly rental and then a job within three days. Built myself up from there and never looked back.

Don't be so quick to praise TV. :p Most European countries have English as a requirement, so I'm sure they got a hearty foundation in school. TV is probably just gravy, teaching them slang and that kind of stuff.

Might do it in the near future.. From San Jose, CA to Los Angeles. Yes, I know it's only 350 miles or so, but culturally, it's a different planet altogether.

Moved from New York State to Alaska with just me, my wife and our son who was five at the time. Didn't know anyone here and had no jobs lined up or anything.

It was rough at first, but all that's behind us now and we have no plans to return to the overpopulated lower 48 again!

I even flew back last summer to move my mother up here with us.
