Actually, it's the power (watts). Which is voltage (volts) * current (amps).
Additionally, the effect of alternating current at the right frequency/phase is pretty damn killer, literally. It can take a lot less power than DC.
 
I use nature's VOM all the time. But I have a Radio Shack VOM in my video bag to know exactly what the current voltage is.

Use 9v for smoke detectors, Beachtek pre-amp/XLR, A-T Wireless Trans/Rcv audio.
 
I had a Lego set when I was a kid, that ran on a 9V battery (just lights and sirens, this was before I started getting motors and the like), so all my giant boxes of legos started to accumulate 9V batteries, and I couldn't ever tell a good of from a bad on until I bridged the terminals with my tounge - musta done this several times a day from when I was 4 to when I hit 6 or so and got a motor kit that used AA's - couldn't test those on your tounge.
