I had a bloody head at the Hillsboro city pool one summer when I was in Jr. High from doing a dive off of the highest platform and trying to see how deep I could dive. The pool was a 12' and I nailed the bottom and blacked out for a few minutes.

Smacked into the side of the pool playing crosspool (Sharks and Minnows for all you hicks out there) and took off 3 braces and a pretty big piece of paint.
They found paint chips in my teeth like a month later even!

At a swim meet I saw a swimmer do a start on backstroke and go too deep. They took a door off its hinges and got him out of the pool into an ambulance on it. :(

Done it - jumping off the highest platform and thankfully only slamming my big toe against the pool's bottom. That was only my second jump from that platform too.

I don't get it?

I'm another one who scraped my teeth on the bottom of a pool once. I still cringe when I think of it.

I was bedmates in the hospital once with a guy who was paralyzed from hitting his head on the bottom of a pool :(

Yep... toes curled over the edge of the pool, starter says "take your mark," you pull yourself up, when the starting gun goes off you launch yourself backward into the pool.

Arch your back too far and you go down.

When the starting blocks are in the shallow end of the pool, going down, on your back, back arched (thus head tilted back) is not a good idea.

Can't say as I've ever arched my back far enough to dip 3 feet in all my years of swimming.
That's whack!

I also worked with a guy at IBM who's in a wheelchair as a result of an accident at the local swimming hole.

Not in a pool, no, but on a dare, in the shallows of the ocean I tried to do a flip underwater and smacked my head a good one on the sand.

I lost count of my strokes :)P) doing the backstroke in a Junior High swim meet. I crashed into the side of the pool and fractured my skull.

Problem was my hair was so thick at the time, my parents and I didn't know it was that bad until a week later I started to have these horrible migrane-like headaches every time I went underwater. It turns out the calcium from my skull (while trying to stitch my skull back together) was breaking up under the pressure from the water and entering the bloodstream.

It felt like I was wearing an iron helmet and someone was whacking me on it with a baseball bat. Now, I just have a lump on the back of the old nogging from the extra bone buildup.

My brother broke his neck doing high dives off of a cliff at the Little Rock Rec area north of Los Angeles about 18 years ago. The wind blew him over a few feet into a shallow sand bar. Luckily he wasn't paralized, but he did have to wear a halo the rest of the summer.

The very next summer, he found a tumor in his neck... it was Hodgkins. He survived that, too... after a summer filled with chemo and radiation treatments.

Needless to say, he's 39 but has the body of a 60 year old now.
