However, I still can't get past the fact that she was foolish enough to fall for it. I cannot believe how dense some of these young females are. When I was 13 I didn't look at the popups for "Free cams!", "I love you! Come watch me for free!" and think, "HOLY COW SOMEONE LOVES ME AND WANTS ME TO WATCH THEM!"

Honestly, he should have been executed and she should have been bitch slapped for her stupidity.

Society today is completely moronic.

The fact is that many girls that age have terrible self-esteem problems, feel ugly, the ones who don't have "boyfriends" feel like outcasts, their hormones cause mood swings, etc. It's really not fair to call them foolish and stupid. They run into someone online who makes them feel good, flatters them, and they just aren't emotionally developed enough to look at the situation logically. And I don't think the girls have a clue how old the person really is. They might be more wary if they knew the guy was in his 30's, but that's not generally how it goes down.

Many girls in their older teens can be seduced just as easily although it's more likely to be in a face-to-face situation.

You're right! We need to bring back public executions for them damnit! Drawing and quarterings! Screw those pesky trials and courts of law! This is national TV!

Shut up, moron. No one is defending or "standing up" for sex offenders. The argument is over who should be enforcing the law: the police or the media.

ummm...can you exactly show where the media has tried an convicted these men in a court of law?

keep in mind the court of law and the court of opinion are 2 separate issues.

There's something I could never figure out... Female police officers dress up as prostitutes, and they arrest men who are soliciting prostitution. But for the most part, they do next to nothing to catch online predators. "To catch a predator" is wildly successful at finding predators. It seems that the police departments are either grossly incompetent when it comes to technology, or they don't care.

Or, maybe they lack the proper manpower and resources and, perhaps, apathy? In a large city, such as New York, I can imagine a murder is just one of many common occurances.

But which is more damaging? Especially with regard to a sex crime?

That's not the point. v1001 was implying that those who favor the power of the court of law over the court of opinion are "sick" and "Standing up for these guys that come to the house to have sex with a 13 YEAR OLD!"
That was an ugly and uncalled-for straw man, and as such he deserved the derision I gave him. No one is "standing up" for sex offenders. What some people are doing is questioning the wisdom and justice of resorting to ratings-driven media vigilantism.

Or... perhaps... just perhaps, the crime is not as prevalent as a sensationalist media would have us believe?

I recall driving through the town of Aberdeen, WA (home of Kurt Cobain) a few years back and seeing a board in front the police department boasting of the number of DUI convictions they had made so far that year. I say boasting because I recall that it was a rather large number for such a smallish town (~16,000). My first thought on seeing it was, what does this say about Aberdeen? That DUI is not tolerated here? Or that DUI is a problem here? I'm sure that the intention of the police was the former, but actually, due to Aberdeen's reputation of poverty and high unemployment, the public perception is probably the latter.

Regardless, flawed though it may be, our legal system exists for a reason. It is the foundation of civilization (such as it is). Media vigilantism, like To Catch a Predator, serves only to undermine the public trust in the legal system in favor of the lynch mob. That might provide a temporary sense of empowerment to those who feel disempowered, but the long term effect can only be ruinous.
