That laptop looks huge and heavy. Why would you want it? I would much rather have a Thinkpad A21 PII 700 for that price. It's so huge it has a number pad on it...

I bought an mtech in July... p3 650 w/ lots of goodies. Runs a bit hot, but all laptops might do that, dunno, this was my first one. Overall I am completely happy with it. Was many hundreds of dollars cheaper than a 'brand-name' laptop with the exact same specs and have absolutely no regrets about it.

I'm told that a lot of these manufacturers are fitting their 1 GHz laptops with non-mobile 1 GHz chips, which equates to a lot of heat and power consumption. I'd ask them about that.

If Intel doesn't list a 1ghz "mobile" cpu, then the cpu in the laptop is probably a regular 1ghz chip (FCPGA). Which means you have shorter battery life, and a higher chance of your cpu running "too hot" or burning up. :( Since I've had some experiences with laptops equiped with non-mobile cpu's running extremely hot and also dying after 3 months of usage. I would recommend you to stay away from them and stick with a "name-brand".

Just to clarify my above post, mine IS a mobile chip... its the 500/650 speedstep (runs 500 off battery, 650 when run off AC). MTech is a reputable brand, just not one of the big-name computer system builders. I can't comment on the 1ghz issue, just giving my experience with the one I bought. Running 7 months now without a problem.

when buying laptops.. stick to name brands.. and new, you want a nice warrantee and decent company to back that up. If you want to cheap out, get a palm pilot:p

i called em up. its not a mobil. says they have no problems with heat, etc, since the latest die shrink.

i'm debating it.

i need something i can run win2k server, SQL server enterprise, and visual studio all at once. i basically need to be able to take my development environment with me on support calls.

this is damn cheap, 1000 less than an 850 name brand.

it does come with a full year parts and labor. they are insured to cover the warranty costs.

I'd stay away from fly-by-night places like this. I got a laptop from EPS technologies. Terrible service, accused me of being a hacker(they wrote that on the repair bill), HD went bad(replaced), MB went bad(replaced), then went out of business right after the first year of my extended 3 year warrenty. Stick to the brand names. Pay the extra, it will show.

my friend just bought an mtech laptop about a month ago. he says it's pretty good, plus it came with a whole bunch of goodies, like dvd and a 15.1 inches screen. Another good thing about them is that if you can get your own operating system than you can get it for a little cheaper(even though when my friend ordered he asked for no os but got win98). also i like all the interfaces that it has.
