it can be anything, for example, quick cold-to-hot or hot-to-warm transitions in equipment/structures can causes noises or popping sounds
Yep I know the normal sounds, sometimes things rise above the noise floor but this was like Godzilla in a coffee shop!
I've had that happen to me before, when I was a kid. I was outside and the throbbing seemed to emanate from the air around me. it spooked me out, and I never did figure out what it was.
Yes it's one of those things that makes your hair tingle like walking in the woods at night and hearing a sound you think may be a bear and your torch fails plunging you into darkness...
Air passing under the hull? Rough seas?
Rascal scooter climbing the ramp to the upper disco deck?
Fuel tanks rupturing and flooding the bilge tanks? Ready to spit fire?
Definitely none of those. The collapse of a fuel bunker if its walls are suddenly cooled is a pretty scary sound though. The concussion is probably the same as a medium sized howitzer going off, inside a building.
One day last summer i heard what sounded like flame blast of a hot air balloon. About the 2nd or 3rd time i heard it, it dawned on me that it was entirely too windy to be a balloon. It was loud too, like it should be very close.
I went outside to look around but couldn't see anything but could still hear it, like 3-4 minutes apart. I started to walk down the road to get a better view, away from the trees, but the noise stopped & i never did see anything. There weren't any support vehicles on the road either, like there normally would be for ballooning.
The propane burner makes a distinct noise and it seems like I was the only one noting how annoying it was. Dogs below bark at them too.
If it was windy it could have been faulting power lines. (although your power would most likely have been going off and on.)
That's definitely weird, especially when you have lots of other people around to verify you just aren't crazy.
Some years back I was doing some work out in the yard - cleaning up, watering the lawn, etc. I had to run into the house and down into the basement to look for something, so I'm digging a bit thru where I thought it was on the side I use for storage. Then I notice this faint moaning type sound. At first I just kinda ignored it, but then I heard it again, and then again. It wasn't exactly the same each time, and it seemed like it was actually moving closer or further with each one.
Half of my basement is finished, including ceiling tiles, and the intermittent sound seemed to be coming from that side. I figured maybe my cat was down there and was sick or something. I walk over there, and still would hear it every 5-10 seconds, and it's duration would vary slightly along with the pitch.
I could hear it much better on that side, and that's when I actually started getting creeped out a little. I noticed it seemed to be coming from above the ceiling, but hearing it better it sure didn't sound like a cat - just a really creepy variable pitched moaning/groaning. I investigate (it's divided up into a few rooms on that side) and it seemed to be getting louder, more frequent, and what really got me is that it seemed to move all over the place above the ceiling with almost supernatural speed. I poked my head up above the tiles in a few places and saw nothing, but you can't really see too far.
I thought I was losing my mind. So I go upstairs thinking it was something upstairs. Nope. I hear it coming from below the floor. While I'm walking around the upstairs though, out of the corner of my eye I seen it! I couldn't believe it! It dawned on me when I caught the sprinkler I had going outside out of the corner of my eye... I hit a magical sweet spot on the outside faucet and it was the water pipes on the floor joists groaning at me. Yup, I'm a dumb-ass lol, I was starting to get seriously freaked out after chasing the sound for a good 10 minutes.![]()
Pipes can make some strange noises indeed. I remember the orphanage where I spent most of my young life, an old building with hydronic (radiator) heating. When the valves would open up and the hot water started to flow the copper would expand and it made noises that sounded like gremlins were in the walls with little hammers chipping away. It was very creepy especially to a child. I was fascinated to learn what the root cause was, however!
Engine exploding isn't real damage? :hmm:
Hope everything is ok.![]()
Well yes to the engine. Thank goodness it happened while the engineer was on a break. ()
Everything is fine. It would even be better if we knew exactly what caused the noise, however. For now it remains a mystery.
