it can be anything, for example, quick cold-to-hot or hot-to-warm transitions in equipment/structures can causes noises or popping sounds

Yep I know the normal sounds, sometimes things rise above the noise floor but this was like Godzilla in a coffee shop!

I've had that happen to me before, when I was a kid. I was outside and the throbbing seemed to emanate from the air around me. it spooked me out, and I never did figure out what it was.

Yes it's one of those things that makes your hair tingle like walking in the woods at night and hearing a sound you think may be a bear and your torch fails plunging you into darkness...

Air passing under the hull? Rough seas?

Rascal scooter climbing the ramp to the upper disco deck?

Fuel tanks rupturing and flooding the bilge tanks? Ready to spit fire?

Definitely none of those. The collapse of a fuel bunker if its walls are suddenly cooled is a pretty scary sound though. The concussion is probably the same as a medium sized howitzer going off, inside a building.

One day last summer i heard what sounded like flame blast of a hot air balloon. About the 2nd or 3rd time i heard it, it dawned on me that it was entirely too windy to be a balloon. It was loud too, like it should be very close.

I went outside to look around but couldn't see anything but could still hear it, like 3-4 minutes apart. I started to walk down the road to get a better view, away from the trees, but the noise stopped & i never did see anything. There weren't any support vehicles on the road either, like there normally would be for ballooning.

The propane burner makes a distinct noise and it seems like I was the only one noting how annoying it was. Dogs below bark at them too.

If it was windy it could have been faulting power lines. (although your power would most likely have been going off and on.)

That's definitely weird, especially when you have lots of other people around to verify you just aren't crazy.

Some years back I was doing some work out in the yard - cleaning up, watering the lawn, etc. I had to run into the house and down into the basement to look for something, so I'm digging a bit thru where I thought it was on the side I use for storage. Then I notice this faint moaning type sound. At first I just kinda ignored it, but then I heard it again, and then again. It wasn't exactly the same each time, and it seemed like it was actually moving closer or further with each one.

Half of my basement is finished, including ceiling tiles, and the intermittent sound seemed to be coming from that side. I figured maybe my cat was down there and was sick or something. I walk over there, and still would hear it every 5-10 seconds, and it's duration would vary slightly along with the pitch.

I could hear it much better on that side, and that's when I actually started getting creeped out a little. I noticed it seemed to be coming from above the ceiling, but hearing it better it sure didn't sound like a cat - just a really creepy variable pitched moaning/groaning. I investigate (it's divided up into a few rooms on that side) and it seemed to be getting louder, more frequent, and what really got me is that it seemed to move all over the place above the ceiling with almost supernatural speed. I poked my head up above the tiles in a few places and saw nothing, but you can't really see too far.

I thought I was losing my mind. So I go upstairs thinking it was something upstairs. Nope. I hear it coming from below the floor. While I'm walking around the upstairs though, out of the corner of my eye I seen it! I couldn't believe it! It dawned on me when I caught the sprinkler I had going outside out of the corner of my eye... I hit a magical sweet spot on the outside faucet and it was the water pipes on the floor joists groaning at me. Yup, I'm a dumb-ass lol, I was starting to get seriously freaked out after chasing the sound for a good 10 minutes.

Pipes can make some strange noises indeed. I remember the orphanage where I spent most of my young life, an old building with hydronic (radiator) heating. When the valves would open up and the hot water started to flow the copper would expand and it made noises that sounded like gremlins were in the walls with little hammers chipping away. It was very creepy especially to a child. I was fascinated to learn what the root cause was, however!

Engine exploding isn't real damage? :hmm:

Hope everything is ok. :)

Well yes to the engine. Thank goodness it happened while the engineer was on a break. ():)

Everything is fine. It would even be better if we knew exactly what caused the noise, however. For now it remains a mystery. :(

I was just going to come in and suggest water hammer and steam pipes. Being a factory rat all my life I've heard some of the strangest banging, popping, throbbing, whistling, and screaming noises come from pipes.

Another thought might be some sort of seismic event. I imagine water would propagate a pulse for many miles. Even a gas release from an volcano-lite.

Shhhh...don't even think about gas release from volcanoes! Those things tend to make ships literally disappear in mere minutes (or less!).

If I want to feel like I'm falling I'll ride a roller coaster.

Oh and yes water hammer (and expanding pipes as mentioned earlier) definitely make some strange noises. This was LOUD and predominately infrasonic. If I were to guess it was in the 0.2-5Hz range, 140-170dB.

Strange noises in my apartment sometimes. The building is over 100 years old...so that's expected.

My place is only 25 years old but when the temperature starts changing there's all kinds of weird noises, including some really loud thumps. Its possible my house is haunted, the previous owners wife did commit suicide here but I'm pretty sure its just house settling.

There is land under the water :)

Of course there is and most of the violent quakes occur under water. Point is if/when this would happen we would not feel it like people on land do when a quake hits.

The captain is just showing off driving too close to shore and honking the horn for his GF.

Sometimes when I lay on one side in the bed so that one ear is blocked by my pillow, the sound of my fan becomes the sound of whispering voices. I know this happens, but it still can cause me to jerk upright and try to hear what they are saying. Of course with both ears, the sound resolves into the sound of the fan. As soon as I lay back down though, it returns.

obviously it's your pillow trying to tell you something.

Sometimes I hear noises or voices in my head.
It started when I was on drugs.
I've been off drugs for over 3 years & it still happens. Not as frequently though.

One time I heard my exes voice behind me. I hadn't heard her voice or seen in her in 6 months at that time. That shook me up a bit.

Had one at a party one night many years ago. It was winding down, people has left or were in a quiet torpor so the sound level was way down. I hear this POP noise from the kitchen and go to investigate. It was as clear as could be, but no idea what it was.
Finally over under the counter against the baseboard, I spy this little rectangle of red plastic. WTF?
Now I gotta figure this out. I start looking around, and way across the room, Mr Coffee is missing his red "on" lens.
Condensation must have built up till it arced, flashed to steam, and blew the lens off!

Yes. Every now and then, while lying in bed, I can hear a low cyclical vibration noise. It's not scary - it's just weird.

First time I made a woman orgasm she let out a howl that was just plain weird. Like a cross between a irish banshee and a wounded mountain lion. Scared the crap out of me.

If that happened to me I'd get rid of the fan even if it meant sleeping naked with no covers, ever!
Pics? (sorry, someone had to)

I remember I had a contractor doing work in my basement once, and he mentioned that he thought I had mice since he could hear them scratching around behind the walls. Since I HAD caught mice in the house before, I spent some time just sitting quietly in the basement and listening. Sure enough, there were some very intermittent strange sounds that I couldn't pinpoint. But they didn't seem to be coming from behind the walls, they were from somewhere in the room. I about drove myself crazy, trying to move very slowly so as not to disturb the mouse, wait, wait, wait for the sound, move again, then finally grab something and move it quickly to see if it was under there.

Finally I realized that I had a batch of apple cider that was still fermenting after several weeks, and occasionally the airlock would release a bubble. That was making the noise. I had it under a box to protect it from the light, so I hadn't seen the movement and the sound was muffled.

Yeah, I have been camping near Taos, NM, and heard the famous Taos hum. Also the farm I lived at in the Pojoaque Valley would get shockwaves from detonator tests at Los Alamos, always fun to explain to visitors.

i was stationed in at nellis just ouside of vegas when they were still doing underground nuke test. i have felt a few small earth quakes due to the testing... really strange knowing that vibration you just felt was due to a nuke blast.
