Ever have a stick of ram just die on you?

I have 2x256mb(512mb) PC2100 DDR Crucial dimms in my pc.

Today while booting up, I noticed that only 1 dimm(256mb) of my ram was being detected.

So I proceeded to pull each dimm & try one at a time.

And sure enough, my pc will not post with the one dimm at all. (just that beep we all know too well)
It doesnt matter which ram slot I use with either dimm either, one works in both, the other doesnt.

Honestly, this is the 1st time in my 11 or so years of building PCs that i ever lost a perfectly good stick of ram.

Ive had crappy ram that wouldnt OC or create errors before, but this ram has been serving me well since Jan 2001,
then all of a sudden, poof.... one dimm just doesnt work anymore.

No, the ram wasnt OCed either, its a Tbird 1.4ghz @ 133fsb(266) on a Epox 8K7A.

Huh, is this common & Ive been real lucky all these years?

I wonder what Crucial would do if I send it back. hmmm...

Oh well, at least ram is cheaper now & it wont cost much to replace, but it still SUCKS!

Well, it must be my unlucky & lucky day.

I just noticed the crucial discount at the top of the board.

Makes me feel a little better.

I would contact crucial as they do offer an excellent guarantee on their ram!

one of my crucial ddr sticks just died last week i havent gotten around to rma'ing it yet. i hear they're good at rma's though.

That's kinda weird. I've never had a dead stick at all. I only had some problems with the motherboard that can't handle certain type/brand of RAM or just simply bad contacts.

Yes, I had a 128mb stick of pc100... half of it died.. only comes up as 64mb.. truly sux... that was before I discover crucial.com and in the days of computer shows...

never trust crap from shows.

Saw a piece of dead SDRAM last week that prevented the machine from booting up (couldn't even get it into BIOS setup). Two different motherboards and three different pieces of RAM in three different slots on each board. It wasn't until we ditched it that everything worked fine. It does happen. You know what they say, "to err is human but it takes a computer to really f*** things up."

I've never had a stick of memory die on me. I'm one to push my memory to the limits as well. That sucks, but I believe Crucial will replace your memory without too much of a hassle.

Yep, lifetime warranty. RMA it, they will overnite you new one (will charge CC), but when they receive the other one, they will credit you back in full!

I just called Crucial, seems theve got caller ID & verified my personal info & purchase of the ram on June 2001 before I had a chance to even speak. (thank god, like Id still have the reciept)

No hassle at all, theyre sending me a new stick of ram & I'll be sending the other one back once its recieved.

As mboy stated, they charged my CC for the new one & Ill be credited when they recieve to defective one.

I had a stick of PC133 128MB SDRAM die on my last spring, and it took my Win98 install w/ it. To this day I'm not sure what happened, but one morning the system wouldn't boot, and after I determined it was a failed stick of RAM I still couldn't get Win98 to operate properly. It did give me the excuse for a format and reinstall. Luckily I had nearly everything backed up. My VAR replaced the RAM stick under warranty.
