I'm really pulling my hair out this past week trying to get some confidence about what's wrong with my system. I really would like to know before ordering my new card so there's no heartache when it comes. I think there is some kinda problem with my open gl rendering, dxdiag even shows agp texture acceleration "not available", although even when it still reported "enabled" the problems still existed.
I've been attempting to play Tribes 2 again recently, and my card was always previously able to run this game. It's not a matter of the game settings, and I also tried it both patched and unpatched. When Tribes 2 is unable to boot using the default settings for the card detected, it boots in it's own t2 safemode, and certain options are locked out, such as texture compression options. I can run the game somewhat, but there is big time artifact garbage regardless of game settings/resolution/etc., and it used to look quite nice and never artifacts.
Sisoft Sandra tells me that the agp bus is correct and at 4x as it should be, my card passes all of the basic onboard graphics tests I have, including those simple ones in dxdiag.
All possible versions of via 4in1's have been tried, and also tried current amd agp drivers during one installation. Every graphics driver that has ever run well on my system has been tried, and the newest ones also. My memory and everything else I can imagine has been verified. I've formatted and reinstalled the whole freakin system etc 2x this week just to be thorough.
I'm thinking of reinstalling a couple of game demos that worked not long ago and see what happens. I only recently finished replaying Jedi Outcast just fine, and a couple of other games that aren't currently installed. I wouldn't be surprised if they run, but obviously something is degraded or messed up compared to when I used to run Tribes 2. Could directx8.1 maybe somehow be at fault? I've heard no such bad things about it. In short, it would be fine with me if it just turns out to be my radeon "going south", but I'd sure like to know
any opinions or comments? quite welcome! I'd especially like to hear from people whose card died
