Ever had one of those moments where you don't know what to do with your life???

Once in awhile I would go through this stage where I'm not sure what I'm doing with my life. I'm about 4 classes away from graduating college but it's been a struggle of will. I don't like school and I don't feel like it's the best thing for me. I know I'm almost done but I'm having such a hard time completing the few classes because I can't stay focus. I can't sit down to do homework, study, or even goto class. I end up only completing less than half of the classes I enroll in.

On the other end, I love my current job working with kids. I hope to become a teacher one day and I know I'll have to graduate college to become one. But right now it's like I'm already working with kids and although the money isn't great, I'm satisfied.

I feel like just taking a long break from school, enjoy my job now, and just take it easy. But on the other end there's the pressure of my family and friends looking down upon me because I'm one of the last few to graduate.

I don't know what to do or what I want anymore :(

Your family needs to take a backseat. You do need to remember it is your life. If you spend all this time and money on your education, are you hoping to get a different job as a result? Will the job that the education gives you be on that you want?

At the end of the day the only person who has to accept you is you. If you live your whole life for others you're definitely not going to be satisfied.

In the same respect, you are nearly done school, so why not put that last bit of effort into it and get it done. That way you still can keep your old job if you wish (not like they're going to fire someone for being overqualified ;) ), but you also have the option to take a job which requires a higher education.

After I graduate, I would probably still be at the same job for another year or so.

You know two years ago I had only 6-7 classes left. In other words I could have graduated a year ago. But I think i've exhausted all my will power to finish school. It's been a total struggle to get myself to goto class and complete assignments. You can see my grades gradually decline in the past 4 years. At this point I'm not really confident in myself.

The odd thing is that I used to be a straight A honor student in a magnet program taking 5 AP classes. I used to be one of the smartest among my group of friends. Now I'm near dead last to graduate college. sigh.

Is it not an option to take a year off, work, and then return to finish your studies?

Well that's what I want to do but I'm afraid to. Everyone is expecting me to graduate next spring. I told everyone I was graduating the spring that just past. I kept delaying it and making excuses when in fact I could never complete all the classes I enroll for. So I guess in the end I can't overcome the feeling of shame by friends and family if I don't finish; especially when I'm so close.

just suck it up and finish the classes man! It's 4 freakin classes, then you're done!! In the real world there will be times where similar situations come up. And you have to rise to the challenge. Kepp thinking to yourself. 4 classes, 4 classes, 4 classes. What is that 12 units in all? 2 quarters if you take it easy? Or take some time off from the job and work through those classes in 1 quarter. (Berk goes by quarters right?)

Also be sure to tell your final profs these are your last classes and you're really struggling. I promise they'll give you some slack. Find out what the bare minimum is to finish and do it. You can do it man! I was in the same sort of rut towards the end (Jobs, deaths, war, graduating!) and I felt burnt out. That's when you've gotta push. Turn off the emotions (and by all means if you're smoking the pot, *cough*Berkeley weed*cough*, cut it out for the last few weeks. Don't settle for a low paying job teaching kids if with a little more work you can get a better paying job probably doing the same thing.

I'm in the same boat. I really wish I could take like 6 months off, travel, and figure out what I want to do. Last time I went on any real vacation (longer than a weekend) was when I was 17 (7 years ago). I'm just burned out and sick of school, but don't have the money to do anything.

Dude, I'm in my first semester of college and I'm scared as shi[/b]t because I can't get to class on time (if at all) in the mornings, and I put off or don't do most homework. I hear people talking about studying all the time in college, and I have to say I haven't spent a single second studying. The worst part is not knowing what to do to fix your problems.

I am in my 11th semester of college and I'll give you a piece of advice. Yes, studying is overrated and not necessary all the time (probably not 95% of the time actually) but for the love of all that is sacred and holy GET TO CLASS ON TIME ALL THE TIME. I cannot stress that enough. From my longwinded experience through college I have found that as long as you go to class all the time you will pull at least a C in the course without having to study whatsoever.

See the thing is, I'm actually a pretty reliable guy. I call in to work at most a couple times a year and I'm hardly ever late. The problem with school is that it's in the morning, and I have HORRIBLE issues with sleep. I can't get to bed on time, and I can't get up when I'm supposed to. I have two alarm clocks, each on the other side of the room, and I still lay back down and fall back asleep after hitting snooze. Sometimes I just sleep through all 3 hours of them buzzing away. It's sickening. And if I do manage to get to school after getting 2 hours of sleep, I usually end up having trouble staying awake in class.

BTW, I really appreciate your advice. A lot of the time I see people in ATOT blabbing about how their 3.85 isn't good enough blah blah blah and I just feel like a loser.

Yeah, those people are idiots. Most of them probably never even graduated high school let alone college. At any rate, having a 2.5-2.9 GPA is perfectly acceptable in my opinion. Think about it this way...if a company is willing to hire someone based on their GPA as opposed to their skills would you really want to work for that company? I know I sure as sh!t wouldn't. That's not to say you can't run into the rare situation where someone with similar skills is chosen for a job instead of you because of that higher GPA but I wouldn't count on that happening. Keep at least a GPA that is required to graduate but don't kill yourself for something that, in my opinion, doesn't carry a lot of weight in the real world. As long as you get your diploma (or as I like to call it, your I Is Smart degree) you'll be fine. You get (or should get) three basic tools from college...a degree, interviewing skills (where the job is typically lost or clinched) and finely tuned bullsh!tting skills...everything else is trivial...

After having these same problems my entire life, I've learned quite well to not worry too much about GPA. ;) Thankfully I think I am pretty good at showing people that I'm smart, and as long as I graduate, I think I'll do just fine in the working world. BUT, getting there is looking like it might be really painful. (oh, and I mean the "real" working world -- I do have a job right now too, just a sh[/b]itty one)
