Ever get the urge to take a trip to your homeland?

I would highly recommend it. Any chance at visiting other countries you should jump at. Seriously, don't let your view of the world be limited to the tiny bit of it you've experienced, or worse, what others have told you...only a fool would do that.

Germany rocks! I think fewer people associate with their background with each passing generation, though. By the time I was born, noone in my family was from anywhere but America.

Half my family is German, the other half is Amish. So I just consider myself 100% German.

If you were born in America, you are American not German.

This.

I'm sick of people saying "I am ____" when someone a hundred years before them actually was that. My ancestors were from England, Scotland, and France, but my family back to the early 1800s are all American, mostly from the east coast. I have no urge to travel to Europe, if anything I'd love to see Hong Kong, where my wife's parents are from originally.

Yep, I would say "I want to visit Ireland because many of my ancestors emigrated from there" not "I'm Irish, I want to go back to my "homeland" I've never even been to before."

I'm all for people honoring their heritage, but having Irish or English or whatever ancestors does not make you that. Living there and having citizenship makes you that. In a few years if I decide to get Canadian citizenship, I'll automatically have my US citizenship revoked (since they're so nice and don't recognize dual citizenship anymore), that means I won't be American, I'll be Canadian. I'll still teach my kids to be rude and to want to bomb people who are different from them, but it won't be the same.

My ancestors on my Mom's side are from Sweden. They came to this country in the late 1800s. She considers herself Swedish and she has visited our ancestors in Sweden a couple times.

My Dad's side of the family can trace his roots back to the Revolutionary War in this country. He is English and Dutch mostly but I really consider myself half Swedish.

I married an Italian babe though so my son is pretty much half Italian half mutt I guess. 😀

Why wouldn't you want to visit Europe? I spent 2 weeks in Spain and Portugal recently and would love to go back and visit more of Europe. So much history there. I love Europe.
