i have been working 12-15 hours days every day for the past couple of weeks, and now im stuck in one of those weird states where all i can think about is work and it feels like i should be working all the time. i think the end may be in sight, but now i cant get myself to stop working tons of hours because it feels like thats all i should be doing.

how do you suggest getting out of such a mental state?

Reminds me of those long nights in college where I start thinking all my thoughts in terms of what I was working on. For example, after a long night of programming, I started having my normal thoughts expressed in terms of whatever programming language I was using.

My worst experience is when I was working on an integrated circuit design for about 3 days straight. I started thinking in terms of colored rectangles. It made sense at the time. (example of what integrated circuit design looks like: http://www.mbeckler.org/cadence_plot/flip_flop_cadence.png)

Yes, it's called eye strain. You are zoned out walking around like a zombie.

Usually sex snaps me out of it, followed by some long discussions with the woman with a lot of laughing involved.

Yes. I work in a NOC (network operations center) and I love my job, but at times there is lot of overtime as we've been short staff. At one point I worked like 4 consecutive weeks with maybe 3 days off in there. Some 8 hour shifts and some 12's. Worked all weekends too. Basically the job is to monitor stuff, if we get alarms we can login to certain things to see if we can clear them. Some things we may have to call out people on, etc. It's pretty much the thing of reacting to whatever goes on. One of the critical pieces of equipment we monitor is the DMS telephony switch for the whole region. While the job is relatively easy it takes some alertness. You can't wander off and start surfing the net too long, have to continuously look at all your screens to scan for any new alarms.

One night after a long set of 12 hour shifts and more starting the next morning I wakeup suddenly with the thought "oh crap! I need to be monitoring alarms!" It was also raining extremely hard outside so my first instinct was that I should probably take a walk to the DMS room and rest of the building to double check there's no roof leaks or anything of that sort, as it's happened before. My blackberry was on my nightstand so I picked it up and looked at it, and it was the DMS terminal, no alarms, so I set it back down. Clearly this part was some sort of dream. As I lied there it was raining so hard I actually got up to go check on my own equipment downstairs, but I procrastinated a bit due to being so tired and still half asleep. I was still stuck between some sleep paralysis land, and real life. I actually ended up getting up to go check my stuff downstairs. Only at that point was I fully aware of the fact I was at home and not at work.

Ironicly when I got to work the next morning there was water in a few equipment rooms. Was the weirdest thing ever.

I'm there. I got a call to go do some server work on Saturday, after a string of 10 weeks of 10 hour days with ~3.5 hours of commute each day. Some 5 day, some 6 day weeks.
The server work is 3+ hours away, so my thoughts are all in terms of driving. I'm driving too fast :D

Doesn't happen to me. Anytime I approach 12 hours at work, I feel terrible, makes me sluggish if I do it back to back. 12 hours feels a lot longer for a night shift, though.

I find the 12 hour night shifts actually go by faster then 12 hour days, probably because I'm not as tired. I only start getting tired near the end and it feels awesome to get home and crash then wakeup naturally without an alarm. Normally with my job when I work 12's I get a bunch of time off after though, which is the beauty of the job. There was only that one time where I ended up working a crazy amount of OT.

Some people work 12's 5+ days a week with no time off to compensate. I don't know how they do it.

Over the last few weeks of a summer research project I was spending ~12 hours a day seven days a week in lab for three weeks, and felt great. I love work once I get into the rhythm, and wish it was easier for me to get in that "weird mental state". Right now I'm in my depressed I'm-so-lazy-and-so-far-behind state and it'll probably be a while until I get back into work mode.

Man, 12 hrs a day five days a week? My overtime money would be sweet. But I couldn't do it. I need a good amount of free time after work to relax and rejuv. Working 12 hour days would make me feel like I am always working, and I would get burned out quick.

When I was working 70hr weeks, I had dreams that I was working.
Wasn't very happy about waking up exhausted & not being paid for the time I was dreaming.

I wonder if everyone pushes themselves to the breaking point of work exhaustion until they learn their lesson :p.

I work large amounts of overtime during busy or short staffed seasons. It's worth the extra money. It changes my lifestyle.

Get a hobby. My job is similar and I won't go into details, but yea...get a hobby. Preferably something physical like biking, running, swimming, go to the gym. Anything to take your mind off it.

Yeah I've done 6 day 70+ hours weeks for months at a time. I easily irritated and withdrawn. The only real solution is to work less. Delegate some stuff or find different work or simply work fewer hours. At the end of a 12-13 hour day there is simply no time left but to do the bare necessities like cleaning, laundry and sleep

Seems like these days everyone bends over backwards to make their bosses happy and then learn this lesson the hard way one by one.

I worked 37 hours OT this weekend. Took me two days to recover. But then, I am old.
