I mean when you buy things. I just built my latest PC in May/June and I bought a GF3 Ti200 because I figured it was good enough and I didn't want to spend to much for a GF4. Now I feel like I settled for less and find myself looking for a GF4 card to buy all the time. It was only about $40 more but what I thought I could do without is now killing me.

same for our TV. When I bought it 6 years ago ,or so, I thought 32 inches was big enough. When all along I wanted a 35/36 inch model. To this day I wish I would of bought a bigger set.

And my car.. I wish I had a bigger cam. I told my self I didn't need it and now I wish I had gone bigger. Same with my tires. and on and on

Anyone else, or do you know exactly what you want and don't let anything or anyone change your mind.

I really try to avoid wouldas, couldas, and shouldas. But I do try to learn from my past experiences

You'd be surprised what 'cryptic' motives fuel our purchasing decisions.

That's all I'm gonna say about that.

For me it's easy. I just put things into a best and second best category; then I evaluate my needs 2 - 5 years down the road. If I feel that I would want to have bought the best when thinking ahead then I will buy the best now. If I feel that I just want something to serve its purpose then I will buy the second best (sometimes third or fourth best in reality) and save money.

I'm starting to think more like jjones - I started out buying cheap (not to be confused with "frugal / ferrengi" ;)) b/c that's all I could afford, but after headaches & hassles, I've been shifting my thinking. Now I try to figure out why I want it, what I'm going to use it for, and what I really need. And then balance that against how quickly I think I need it. The more time you have, then you can afford to wait for hot deals / price drops. If I figure I want something that's going to perform well and last (which is most of my electronic gear), then I figure it's worth it to wait the extra time to find a good/hot deal on quality equipment, instead of trying to skimp $20 and settle for something less. And... well, that's really about it, I guess - my other expenses are food (which is consumable, so I usually try to go cheaper on that), college stuff (not much choice - you need the text books, I try to buy used whenever possible), and misc stuff like that.

So yeah - I've learned its better to wait & save up for what I really want than "settling" for something less. But then you need to plan ahead so you can save up for it. Good luck! :)

I think my problem is that after the fact I feel like I based my purchase on trying to be sensible. When I bought my PC gear I bought middle of the road stuff. Thinking that second best was good enough. And it is till I got the " mines faster then yours syndrome" going through my head. It's not like I can't play games at just about maxed out. I just feel like I should of just bought what I really wanted instead of trying to be reasonable with myself. :)

It's good to have those feelings. I work all the time and buy a lot of stuff, but I'm still a student. I have all those extra costs that come up all the time. It's best to evaluate what you need and get that. Sure, splurge when you feel that it's necessary, but keep in mind that overkill can definitely be a bad thing. I bought a Princeton Arcadia 4 years ago. That's a 27" monitor... It was great until I actually tried to use it. I had to get a cordless keyboard to use my monitor. Eventually, I hooked a VCR up to it and started using it as a TV/VCR/DVD display. Of course, I still use it for my computer too... :p Just be sure to look at what you need so you won't get stuck with things you don't need.

I used to always buy top of the line PC parts because I could usually always use the parts in systems I built locally, I used to joke that I actually "owned" nothing when it came to computer stuff,I just used it for a little while.LOL,my kids used to complain because I sold so many of their rigs (the second/third system in the house was always for sale:)

Now I'm more interested in the OS and networking, I've lost patience for and interest in supporting home end users for the most part.I will only build now for select people and would rather just keep spare parts for my own use or to sell/trade for something else I need.

I nornally buy what i think is the best and things i would not regret buying. such as:

Dell 19" LCD(Gf's monitor), Honda Accord SE(Gf's car), Sony Digital camera, Sony 21" monitor, my car, GF4 card, .....etc.

I normally keep my toys, gear, electronics for a long time so why settle for something less? when you'll regret not buying something you really liked <----of course when new things appears on the market it''ll be a different story. But do you really need the latest and greatest?
