if so, how do you usually go about doing it? do you set aside time to be by yourself and write stuff down? do you talk with close friends/family members? post here? :) what questions do you ask yourself? any good books or articles?

I guess I have been blessed in the fact that I knew what I wanted to do with my life since like 10th Grade. I'm now a college graduate going in the same general direction, although not exactly what i thought i was gonna be.

If i had to do this.... I'd certainly ask myself, "What would i be happy doing for the next few decades of my life?" I'd stick with that because money comes and goes, but if you become really good at what you love, you are destined for success.

Not until I got hurt at work a couple of years ago, and the docs have said I'll probably never be able to go back to what I've done for more than 30 yrs. Now, I'm faced with re-training...and really have no idea what field to train it...some things sound OK, but none really grab me...

Put over 25 years in a machine shop before it closed up. During the unemployed period following, I had PLENTY of time to do just that. Too bad I wasted that time. I told myself I would NOT go back into a shop. Guess what? I'm back in a shop!

One thing I finally figured out, is to not sweat the small stuff. I also get a lot more from interacting with other people. It really pays to be nice, and actually listen to what others have to say. Good or bad, you can learn a lot from their experiences.

Same here. I have a crappy state job and live in a city that I HATE. I just interviewed in another state for a company that's really awesome. Let's hope it all went as well as I think it did. :)

I talk with my mother, father, brother, and grandparents on a very regular basis (as in every day). Family is what counts in the end.

I refocus by [re]evaluating my long-term plan (usually my short-term plans are 2 years, mid-term 5, and long-term 10). My plan is what I want to achieve obviously, so I spend time looking at everything in my life and seeing if everything is congruous with that plan. If not, I change it. Spending too much money and hurting your financial goals? Change it. Spending too much time online and not talking to any of your friends and you see that as a problem? Change it.

The easiest way to change is to try and not look at the overall picture, imo. People sometimes wallow in self-pity and think, "I have so many problems", but really it's usually a handful of very small things. Pick something you want to change and make sure it happens, then go on to the next. Be diligent and you'll be where you want to be without even realizing it.

I imagine it's so nice to know your direction. It seems that as long as I can remember now, I've been dazed, confused, ambivalent about everything in my life. I am chaos and disorder personified. Maybe I'm A.D.D. I need direction bad.

A man who writes down goals and displays them in a prominant place is a sucessful man.

<------ Loser. (Knows it, needs to work on it)

Big changes for me this year, all starts with planning, all starts with your mind, the rest will follow.

I like your style. I never could really talk to my family about things. I don't why. Not my friends either. I guess I internalize most everything. My dad pressured me into staying with engineering in college after I had learned that I didn't like it and wasn't good at it.
I would like to change everything and start over, and I can't seem to get past all the bad decisions so far. Man, I'm being a downer. Good luck with your life decisions everyone, do what you're good at and what you love and be with someone you're crazy in love with. I'll just serve as a bad example. :(

I think adventure is good for this. I find that it helps put your life in a different perspective.

To each his own. But in general, you need to challenge yourself in some way that creates risk. Do something you are afraid of. Afterwards, you will have some courage.
