Ever encounter a system that can't be forced off with the power / reset buttons?

I came home today and my media PC wouldn't wake up from sleep (Asus E35M1-M Pro). I tried holding the power button for 25 seconds and it wouldn't shut off. Then I tried the reset button and it also had no effect. I had to go behind my TV stand and pull the power!

Is this the kind of problem we can look forward to with EFI BIOSes?

After restoring the power cord, the power button works as it should. Hybrid sleep is enabled, so the system found hibernate data and restored everything, but it was unresponsive for a LONG time.

That's bizarre, I've never seen a power button not work unless it wasn't wired up properly from the motherboard. I've never had to hold a power button for more than about 5 seconds either for it to kick in.

*shines torch under face*
I've heard stories of rumors of supposed events where systems remain alive... even when their cords are removed! It is said they are possessed by an unnatural entity residing deep within. What they want no one knew, for they responded not to taps of the keyboard nor to flicks of switches. T'was said these systems also made strange sounds at certain times in the dead of night. In all cases, these users left their systems on all night prior to the strange events.

I've had lousy luck with sleep/hibernate on computers, so much so I just don't use it. I've had my system do what you describe, go to sleep and not wake up.

I usually run bionc anyways so sleeping is a non starter anyways.

I've seen it before on some OEM desktops and laptops. I am not sure whether it was by design, hardware failure, or problem with the cmos programming.

I've seen options in the Bios that can control the function of the power button. It will change from power off immediately to sleep etc. Maybe that got messed up.?

i've seen power/reset not work. i just flip the power PSU switch or unplug. works every time.
......so far:\

Not powering off after 4 seconds is probably a violation of ACPI.

----

4.7.2.2.1.3 Power Button Override
The ACPI specification also allows that if the user presses the power button for more than four seconds
while the system is in the working state, a hardware event is generated and the system will transition to the
soft-off state. This hardware event is called a power button override. In reaction to the power button
override event, the hardware clears the power button status bit (PWRBTN_STS).

----

Do you think you can bash the motherboard over its manufacturer's head for that?
